Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

Come and join our Adult Psychology service working within University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust (UHS) which is a provider of regional and tertiary acute physical care.

We are currently recruiting to roles working within the Major Trauma (0.5wte), the Spinal Cord Injury (0.5wte), and Teenage and Young Person’s Cancer Services (0.6wte).  These are established and valued roles. You will work with, and report to, the Consultant Psychologists within your clinical area to  provide psychologically informed care within MDT settings.

We promote flexible working and would be happy to discuss applications from candidates wishing to take on one role as well as those wishing to combine two roles (between 0.5 and 1.0 WTE).  Balancing wellbeing with work demands and developing your professional skills are highly valued within the UHS Adult Psychology team. It offers many opportunities to develop your interest in therapeutic approaches through informal networking, facilitated reflective practice, education days and specialist supervision or discussion groups. Currently we have active interests in Systemic, Acceptance and Commitment, and EMDR but facilitate learning in other approaches.

UHS Adult Psychology are active in local and national specialist psychology groups, are developing a research strategy and have close links with Southampton University Clinical and Health Psychology courses.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will work with the clinical teams to provide a psychological service for the team, patients, and families. You will offer assessment and therapeutic interventions to patients and supervision, consultation, and training to medical teams. You will work to embed psychological principals within patient care and link to national specialist groups within clinical health psychology.

Experience in working in an acute physical health setting and with evidence-based approaches to managing trauma is beneficial.

These posts may be appropriate for preceptorships and newly qualified psychologists depending on pre-qualification experience.

We would be willing to be accept applications who are in the final stages of training and will be applying for HCPC registration after qualification.  This would be a preceptorship role.

Within all posts you will connect to the wider UHS Adult Psychology team and other link with Child Psychology, Neuro Psychology, Mental Health Liaison and wider psychological services to develop pathways around patient care.

We have generic job descriptions to assist career development and gaining experience.  We encourage applicants to contact us to discuss posts and to carefully consider the person specification in their application.
We would be very happy to answer any of your questions.

If you would like to find out more information this post, please contact Dr Lizzy Pink (Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Acute Care Pathway Lead) and Dr Helen Aiston (Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Cancer and Blood disorders Lead) by email [email protected]

**Please note, this role is currently being Tupe'd to UHS. Whilst the Job description shows Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare, the role is for University Hospital Southampton
