Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity to join the haematology directorate delivering advanced clinical care to patients with Haematological cancers. The Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner post holder will work within the busy and dynamic teams covering both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care and experience and will have significant nursing / Allied Health Professional experience within the medical and oncology setting. They will be supported to complete their MSc in advanced clinical Practice, enabling them to work autonomously in the planning, assessment and delivery of care for this complex group of patients.
The candidate will need to have a high level of experience in acute care or oncology at band 6 or above and have a sound clinical knowledge, whilst also demonstrating managerial and leadership abilities. On completion of training, you will continue to be supported to become an autonomous practitioner within the multidisciplinary team, offering support to both our nursing, AHP and junior medical colleagues.
The post holder will be expected to work over 5 days per week of which 15 hours will be dedicated to academic study. Upon qualifying, the role will have a specific disease related focus and work across both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Please note that this may incorporate Weekends and Bank Holidays.
The successful applicant must be able to commence in post September 2026.
Main duties of the job
• Provide clinical assessment and support to the care and treatment of a diverse caseload of patients requiring haematology input and transplant.
• Demonstrate a highly specialist knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and management of patients with haematological malignancies and those requiring transplant.
• Demonstrate a high level of specialist knowledge and skills in the acute care and management of patients receiving SACT.
• Provide medical support to the day unit and ambulatory care units as well as the inpatient ward at The Christie Foundation Trust.
• Request investigations, procedures and make appropriate referrals maintaining relevant clinical records.
• Non-Medical prescribing is fundamental in supporting this role
• Clinical examination skills are essential for this role
• Provide clinical expertise for developing and enhancing the haematology and transplant service.
• Work alongside the medical, AHP and nursing teams, maintaining good communication and collaboration between the various multidisciplinary teams.
• To be a highly visible and approachable role model, ensuring that best practice is disseminated throughout the clinical areas.
• Demonstrate a high commitment to the four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice which includes Clinical practice, Education, Leadership and Management, and Research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The post holder will be an experienced registered health or social care practitioner qualified to at least Level 6 Degree in a relevant specialty area or equivalent. Individual training needs will be met by undertaking a master’s in advanced practice and completing a clinical portfolio, relevant to the specialty area, to achieve the level of competence and capability required for the post. They will be expected to gain accreditation and obtain a digital badge with National Health Service England (NHSE) via The Centre for Advancing Practice.
The post holder will act as a role model to develop the knowledge to deliver advanced practice skills within their area, promoting patient centred clinical effectiveness in care, developing the skills to work autonomously in delivering independent assessment of undiagnosed presentations. This will include developing the skills to perform clinical examination, diagnosis, clinical decision making and planning of care and treatment, diagnosis, prescribing, health promotion and safe discharge of patients as required for the role. The post holder will work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team to develop the skills to play an integral role in the operational/strategic leadership and development of the service.
The Trainee Advanced Practitioner is service driven and will be developing skills during their training across the four pillars of advanced practice as outlined in the multi-professional framework for Advanced Practice in England (2025); clinical practice; leadership and management; education and training; research, quality improvement and service development.
Communication
• Produce accurate and complete documentation and patient records consistent with legislation, policies, and procedures. These should develop to demonstrate the use of expertise in decision making skill which have informed advanced clinical reasoning.
• Communicate effectively, often about complex, sensitive and potentially distressing information – such as prognostic indication for poor clinical outcome based on diagnostic markers, or on multi-professional case reviews.
• Anticipate barriers to communication and establish methods of overcoming these, ensuring patients and significant others are kept fully informed and consent to treatment is maintained.
Knowledge Training and Experience
• The post holder will develop highly specialist knowledge through the MSc Advanced Practice apprenticeship program. This will be underpinned by theoretical knowledge and extensive relevant practical experience, acquired through a combination of in-depth experience and postgraduate post-registration study, such as that obtained through a master’s degree. They will have significant formal training in, or experience with their clinical specialty.
• They will maintain and develop this expertise and competence to enable collaboration with senior colleagues and medical staff, and to facilitate the management of patients.
• Develop the knowledge, skills, and experience to allow them to act as an expert resource and provide advice and support to ward/departmental areas and to The Christie’s local, and regional partners.
• The post holder will practice in compliance with relevant code of professional conduct and maintain professional registration and practice through CPD including maintaining a professional portfolio to demonstrate competency in line with the trust Advanced Practice competency framework to ensure that skills remain optimal and new elements can be added to the skills portfolio and presented at annual appraisal.
• They will identify their own development needs in line with service requirements and participate in setting a personal development plan. To support this, they will work with a named mentor from within the medical team or a more senior Advanced Practitioner.
• Through supervision and mentorship identify personal learning needs, participating in personal continuing education and other activities to promote one’s own personal growth across the four pillars.
• Develop the skills to interpret and evaluate information from diverse sources to make informed judgements about its quality, appropriateness for practice and service delivery.

Analytical and Judgement Skills
• The post holder will assess complex facts and situations, using analytical skill, interpretation, and comparison of a range of options using a wide variety of assessment methods. In the clinical management of patients, competing, contradictory or unclear inputs are expected. Owing to the nature of the post following the whole patient pathway, they may have competing expected outcomes from the patient, the Trust, and other healthcare partners.
• The post holder will continually review and evaluate their own role and clinical practice informing the annual appraisal review process. They will practice evidence-based health care and by assessing clinical evidence, best practice guidelines and national policy statements will be responsible for defining developing, monitoring, and updating Trust clinical policies in relation to their own area of practice.
