Research Nurse

Band 5

Job overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for an NMC-registered nurse to join our Cancer Research Team at Southampton General Hospital as a Band 5 Research Nurse within our Gastrointestinal Cancer Research portfolio.
This is a unique opportunity to combine clinical nursing expertise with cutting-edge research, helping to shape the future of cancer care. As part of a dedicated and supportive research team, you will work closely with clinical and non-clinical colleagues to deliver high-quality clinical research studies and provide outstanding care to patients taking part in research.
Clinical research offers a rewarding, patient-centred career where every study contributes to advancing treatment options and improving outcomes for future patients. At UHS, we are committed to ensuring equitable access to research by embedding studies within routine clinical pathways, enabling eligible patients to access innovative therapies while enhancing their overall care experience.
The Cancer Research Team is a dynamic and collaborative group within the wider UHS Research & Development workforce. We work closely with clinicians, allied health professionals, sponsors, and external partners to deliver research safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. We are committed to supporting professional development and can provide a rich learning environment for those looking to develop a career in clinical research.

Working for our organisation

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 30% lower than London and 17 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Research Nurse, you will play an important role in delivering a diverse portfolio of cancer research studies from study set-up through to close-out. Working within a supportive and experienced multidisciplinary team, you will help ensure participants have access to high-quality clinical research opportunities.

Your responsibilities will include:
•    Supporting the delivery of a range of commercial and non-commercial research studies.
•    Identifying, recruiting, consenting and following up patients and participants involved in clinical trials.
•    Administering research treatments, including Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT), in line with study protocols and Trust policies.
•    Undertaking clinical assessments and ensuring accurate collection and recording of high-quality research data.
•    Providing care and support to research participants across a variety of settings, including inpatient wards, outpatient clinics (such as Hamwic House) and other clinical areas.
•    Working from the Cancer Research Office on E Level while collaborating closely with clinical and research teams across the Trust.
•    Contributing to quality improvement initiatives, audits and service development projects.
•    Supporting the education and development of healthcare students by acting as a Practice Supervisor and/or Practice Assessor where appropriate.

About You

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and compassionate registered nurses who are interested in developing a career in clinical research.
Previous research experience is desirable but not essential, as comprehensive training will be provided through our dedicated Research Education Programme. You will receive a structured induction, ongoing professional development opportunities and support from a welcoming and experienced team.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates who have experience in administering Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT), although support and development opportunities will be available for the right candidate.
This role offers the chance to make a meaningful contribution to the future of cancer treatment while supporting patients through their research journey. If you are passionate about delivering excellent patient care, have strong clinical skills, and are looking for a rewarding new challenge, we would love to hear from you.

Why Join Us?

As part of the GI Cancer Research Team, you will contribute to the delivery of studies across a range of gastrointestinal cancer specialties, including:
•    Colorectal cancer
•    Pancreatic cancer
•    Oesophageal cancer
•    Other gastrointestinal malignancies
You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of studies involving surgery, chemotherapy and innovative cancer treatments, helping to improve outcomes for patients through research.
If you are interested in a career in research and would like to find out more, we encourage you to get in touch for an informal discussion.
