UK Organiser

Bolton (Northwest Region), Sunderland (Northern Region), Leeds (Yorkshire and Humber Region)

Permanent, 35 hours per week

Salary range £46,623 - £58,089 per annum*

At the Royal College of Nursing we’re an optimistic organisation. And we’ve got good reason to be. We all share the same voice when it comes to changing the shape of the health policies of the future. And as the largest trade union of nursing staff and students in the UK – with over half a million members – all we can see are the infinite possibilities for a brighter future. Join us and you will too.

The role

If you’re looking to find a workplace with strong values of fairness, social justice and the opportunity to make a real difference to thousands of nursing professionals, then the UK Organiser role may be a good fit for you.

As a UK Organiser you will work across the UK supporting the development and delivering of key organising activity, drives and campaigns. You’ll be working closely with members and RCN staff developing strong nursing leaders and building effective activism structures that support members to win on the issues that matter to them and the nursing profession.

It's a job full of possibilities as you could get involved in anything from member engagement using digital technology; developing workplace teams; to co-producing with member and staff stakeholders a deep organising campaign.

The person

The ability to foster strong professional relationships and encourage close collaboration between members is at the heart of this role. The candidate must have a background in nursing and/or nursing support, who will be able to evidence both knowledge of, and experience in organising and/or activism tactics and tools. The ability to identify, recruit, train, develop and inspire member leaders and activists is at the heart of this role. Your experience should demonstrate your proven ability to bring nursing professional together to tackle local workplace issues that effect your colleagues and/or your patients.

We’re looking for someone who can work as part of a team while hitting individual targets. Who is a go-getter and can follow the direction set by their direct line manager - Senior Organiser, the Head of Organising and the overall strategic direction of the RCN. It is important you can build professional relationships with members and staff by promoting a working atmosphere where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Most importantly you will have a commitment to grow a deeper understanding of the theory and practice of Organising which will help to shape the RCN’s Organising Programme.

If you are unfamiliar with the “organising approach or organising model” this role is likely not to be a good fit. Please also note this is a UK wide role so you will need to travel, stay away from home overnight and work with members on all shifts throughout the UK.

What we offer you

We expect you to be dedicated to the principles of the organising approach, working alongside members developing the RCN Activism Strategy. And we expect you to be rewarded for it. We offer an impressive range of benefits, a broad range of learning development opportunities and an award-winning health and wellbeing programme. We offer annual leave up to 32 days plus bank holidays and three additional days for the Christmas break plus generous maternity, adoption, paternity, and shared parental leave packages.

*We offer a competitive pay structure with annual pay progression until you reach the top of the salary scale. We normally offer new employees the first point of the salary range, although you may be able to negotiate a higher starting salary depending on your skills, experience and current salary.

We are a diverse organisation and understand everyone has different needs and many of our employees enjoy flexible working enabling them to deliver results whilst having a good work life balance. Our hybrid working model allows for up to 60% of your working time to be carried out from home. At least 40% of your working time will be spent working in person.

There may be further flexibility to the locations advertised. Please contact the recruiting manager to discuss if alternative office locations are available.
