An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic and patient-focused individuals to join our Bank Team within the Butterfield Eye Unit at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester.
We are expanding our innovative Virtual Glaucoma Service and are seeking Bank Ophthalmic Technicians to support the delivery of high-quality diagnostic clinics. This role is fundamental in helping us increase capacity, improve patient access to care and reduce waiting times for glaucoma monitoring.
As part of a multidisciplinary ophthalmology team, you will undertake a range of diagnostic tests and imaging procedures that enable consultants and specialist clinicians to review patients virtually. You will work directly with patients, providing excellent care and ensuring diagnostic information is collected accurately and efficiently.
This is a flexible bank position with shifts offered according to service needs and your availability, providing an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking flexible working arrangements while contributing to service innovation and patient care.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will support the delivery of ophthalmology diagnostic clinics and the Virtual Glaucoma Service by:
- Performing ophthalmic diagnostic investigations including visual acuity testing, visual field assessment, OCT imaging and intraocular pressure measurement following completion of competency-based training.
- Preparing patients for investigations and ensuring they understand the procedures being undertaken.
- Obtaining high-quality diagnostic images and test results to support virtual and face-to-face clinical decision making.
- Recording clinical information accurately within electronic patient records.
- Supporting the smooth running of diagnostic and outpatient clinics.
- Ensuring all ophthalmic equipment is maintained, cleaned and functioning correctly.
- Identifying and escalating concerns regarding patient safety, wellbeing or unexpected findings to registered practitioners.
- Working collaboratively with consultants, optometrists, nurses, administrators and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Delivering compassionate, patient-centred care whilst maintaining patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Undertake a range of ophthalmic diagnostic procedures following successful completion of required training and competency assessments.
- Perform visual acuity assessments using standardised methods.
- Carry out visual field testing using automated perimetry equipment.
- Perform Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging to agreed departmental standards.
- Measure and record intraocular pressure using approved equipment and techniques.
- Undertake additional diagnostic procedures as deemed competent and appropriate to the role.
- Ensure all diagnostic information is accurately documented within patient records.
- Escalate any concerns regarding patient condition or unusual findings to a registered practitioner.
Support for the Virtual Glaucoma Service
- Contribute to the delivery and expansion of the Virtual Glaucoma Service.
- Ensure all diagnostic data required for virtual review clinics is obtained accurately and efficiently.
- Maintain high standards of image quality and data collection to support remote clinical decision-making.
- Assist with high-volume diagnostic clinics designed to improve patient flow and reduce waiting lists.
- Support service developments and new models of care within ophthalmology.
Patient Care Responsibilities
- Welcome patients to the department and provide clear explanations regarding investigations and procedures.
- Reassure anxious patients and provide support throughout their attendance.
- Treat all patients with dignity, respect and compassion.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with Trust policies and data protection legislation.
- Respond appropriately to patient concerns and escalate complaints or issues when required.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Accurately enter data onto electronic patient records and departmental systems.
- Ensure patient investigations are correctly recorded and filed.
- Assist with appointment preparation and clinic organisation where required.
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with departmental and Trust policies.
Equipment and Resources
- Ensure diagnostic equipment is cleaned and maintained in accordance with local procedures.
- Report equipment faults promptly.
- Participate in routine quality assurance processes as required.
- Support effective stock management and minimise waste.
Communication
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and carers.
- Liaise professionally with ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, technicians and administrative staff.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions and service improvement initiatives.
Training and Development
- Complete all statutory and mandatory training requirements.
- Undertake competency-based training related to ophthalmic diagnostic testing.
- Participate in appraisal and personal development processes.
- Maintain knowledge and skills appropriate to the role.
- Support the induction and development of new staff where appropriate.
Working Arrangements
- This is a Bank position with no guaranteed hours.
- Shifts will be offered in accordance with service requirements and staff availability.
- The post holder may be required to work across diagnostic, outpatient and virtual clinic environments within Ophthalmology.
- Flexibility to support evening and weekend clinics may be required to meet service demands.
