Job overview
We are looking for a Freedom to Speak Up Guardian who will play a visible, trusted and influential role across the organisation. You’ll work closely with Directors, the Chief Executive Officer and the Chair, helping to shape a culture where openness is the norm and every colleague feels confident and safe to speak up. You’ll also build and lead a vibrant network of Freedom to Speak Up champions, ensuring the speak‑up message reaches every team, every service and every corner of the organisation.
Main duties of the job
- Develop and deliver communication and engagement programmes to increase visibility of the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian amongst staff.
- Promote local speaking up processes and sources of support and guidance, demonstrate the impact that speaking up is having in the organisation, and celebrate speaking up.
- Ensure that all staff are aware of, and have access to, support to help them speak up.
- Develop, train and support a network of ‘champions’ to ensure that Freedom to Speak Up reaches all parts of the organisation and everyone has easy access to someone outside their immediate line management chain who can advise and support the
- Ensure that induction presentations include freedom to speak up information and explain the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian role.

Essential criteria
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Educated to degree level or above or equivalent relevant work experience
Desirable criteria
- Clinically qualified healthcare professional
- Member of a registered clinical body
Skills, Knowledge, Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of leading teams / projects
- Evidence of working with multi professional groups and senior leadership
- Clear understanding of FTSU and passionate about promoting speaking up culture
- Understands open / confidential / anonymous approaches and how to manage them
- Knowledge of GDPR and confidentiality
- Knowledge of speaking up agenda, training, policies and raising awareness
Desirable criteria
- NHS or other healthcare setting experience
- Evidence of supporting colleagues to raise issues of concern
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
