Are you an Occupational Therapist with an interest in stroke and rehabilitation looking for a new challenge to work within an in-patient stroke rehabilitation setting? 

Would you like to work as part of a supportive integrated multi-disciplinary team delivering specialist rehabilitation and an opportunity to develop your rehabilitation skills.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work at our Sub-Acute Stroke Rehab Unit (SSARU). The Unit meets the needs of people who are unable to return home immediately after an acute hospital stay, as they need specialist rehabilitation following their stroke. The unit consists of 30 beds at South Bristol Community Hospital, which provides an environment where individuals can receive rehabilitation assessment, along and therapy and support from our multidisciplinary team, to develop independence before they return home.

You will develop your clinical skills with a varied caseload of patients requiring inpatient stroke rehabilitation and be supported by experienced senior therapists. Regular supervise and training opportunities will be provided.

 

Main duties of the job

  • With the support of senior staff be responsible for the initial holistic assessment, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care for patients following a stroke
  • Use clinical reasoning skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate, patient- centred intervention programmes
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals to other services or investigations based on your assessment to ensure holistic patient care
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team  and share knowledge providing holistic and specialist skills supported by a robust competency framework  
  • To use occupational therapy skills, techniques in functional and standardised assessment & interventions as an autonomous practitioner
  • Create person centred, goal-based treatment plans using outcome based approach
  • To assess and arrange the provision of equipment and/or adaptations
  • Supervise members of the team including peers, students and unregistered workforce
  • To maintain accurate, informative, legal and contemporaneous records of all interventions
  • Actively participate in training
  • Work within your scope of practice
  • With the support of senior colleagues, identify and work towards specific objectives and to actively participate in service development projects and audit as required.

Essential criteria
  • Degree/diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC registered
  • Evidence of on-going continuous professional development / Reflective Practice

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to adapt communication for individuals with communication difficulties
  • Able to work autonomously and seek appropriate advice/guidance when required
  • Competent assessment and treatment skills including manual therapy, exercise prescription, directing a class
  • Able to function effectively as a team member
  • Competent IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in the specialist area of stroke or neurology
  • Up to date knowledge of Evidence Based Practice, local and national standards
  • Experience of complex discharge planning
