Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for one Band 4 Clinical Upholstery Technician to join the Posture and Mobility Service at our Posture and Mobility building in Bryn y Neuadd Hospital, Llanfairfechan. The service covers a wide geographical area in North and Mid Wales.
The work will be based in the workshop areas and will involve the manufacture of custom seating covers, other medical devices and the adaptation of mobility equipment. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of clinical, technical and administrative staff.
Main duties of the job
The key objectives of the post are:
- Manufacturing covers and accessories for custom medical devices, and modifying off-the-shelf equipment to suit the patients’ needs.
- Creating patterns to create the covers – iDigit is used to digitise the patterns once the paper ones have been made.
- Supporting clinicians and offering advice on methods of manufacture and fabrics.
This post offers an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop their upholstery skills and will require adaptability to meet a wide variety of clinical and technical requirements.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Essential criteria
- Able to interpret written and diagrammatic information used to specify work

Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable empathy, to envisage the needs of the equipment end user, and adapt & develop upholstery designs as required
- Welsh Language Skills are desirable - levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh
Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- BTEC/SCOTVEC or City & Guilds to Diploma Level in Upholstery & Soft Furnishings or equivalent work experience/qualification
- Working knowledge of physical properties of a range of upholstery materials
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable experience in working in a sewing or upholstery environment
- Demonstrable experience working with sewing machinery
Desirable criteria
- Experience of manufacturing Custom Made Medical Devices
- Experience of manufacturing items within a Quality Management System.
- Experience of working with wheelchair and/or prosthetic users
- Experience of working with digital drawing or patterning software
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
