The Pre-clinical Evaluation Team is a translational research group within the wider Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre division at UKHSA Porton Down, investigating high consequence human pathogens.

Research undertaken includes development of in vivo models, assays to advance the testing of vaccines, and investigation of organ-on-chip technology as an adjunct to our existing capabilities. This role will lead on the implementation of organ on chip models for the study of virus infections and the efficacy of candidate therapeutics.

The post holder will lead their own projects, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both in the team and with external collaborators) and be responsible for the delivery of the scientific and technical activities within the Pre-clinical Evaluation Team.

  • Managing projects and studies to meet agreed deadlines.
  • Use a range of methods/assays in support of all activities associated with the project.
  • Monitoring direct reports’ objectives and performance to ensure project targets are met.
  • Taking responsibility for checking, compiling and reporting project data to stakeholders, including external customers.
  • Leading a project team in identifying, evaluating, and adapting new technologies and methodologies where appropriate, and ensuring that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods.
  • Establishing links and collaborations within and outside UKHSA as necessary to benefit the project and/or department.
  • Supporting members of the project team to meet their PDP objectives and taking lead responsibility for the supervision and training of junior staff allocated to the project.
  • Ensuring that the project team undertakes work in accordance with UKHSA’s Code of Safety Practice and operates within any applicable Quality Systems.
  • Maintaining health and safety competence to the national occupational standard ‘Make sure your actions reduce risks to health and safety’ (NOS HSS1).
  • Identifying, discussing, and actioning own professional performance and training/development needs with line manager.
  • Performing any other duties required by the line manager commensurate with grade.
  • Undertaking the risk assessor role, including associated training and ongoing competency

Essential  criteria

  • PhD, or BSc/MSc (or equivalent) with several years’ experience in biological science/virology subject 
  • Good understanding and experience of analytical methods that are relevant to the project area e.g., bioassays, immunological assays and/or virological assays to support models of infection.
  • Experience of leading projects/project teams and training less-experienced members of staff. 
  • Strong communicator capable of constructing and delivering clear ideas and concepts concisely and accurately for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to prioritise the workload of the team and anticipate the needs of the projects you manage to ensure that project targets and deadlines are met.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in solving problems and making effective decisions, using knowledge, intuition and comprehensive situational awareness.
  • Excellent team working skills with the ability to motivate and support the project team to effectively complete project objectives as well as their own personal development objectives. 
  • Ability to cope, and help others cope, with uncertainty, change and often tight timelines. Be adaptable and work flexibly to meet deadlines.
  • Experience of complex data analysis, presentations, reports, and publications.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience working with primary cells on transwells and/or in organ-on-chip devices
  • Knowledge and experience of practices and principles of working at ADCP containment level 3.
  • Demonstrable experience of having worked within a regulated environment (e.g., GCP, ISO9001) and undergoing audits
  • Skills in networking with the ability to nurture and maintain key relationships both within the organisation and with external customers.

Location

This role is being offered as lab based at our Scientific Campus in Porton. Please note no hybrid working is available for this role.

Based at our scientific campus, you will be required to have a Counter Terrorism Check security vetting check as a minimum. For meaningful National Security Vetting checks to be carried out individuals need to have lived in the UK for a sufficient period of time. You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for the last 3 years as the role requires Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) clearance. Salary Information
If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary.  Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms.
