Main duties of the job

As a Service Technician, you will:

  • Act as the first point of contact for IT issues and service requests, providing timely, professional support to staff across the Trust.

  • Diagnose and resolve problems with hardware, software, printers, mobile devices, and Microsoft 365 applications.

  • Log, track and update service requests and incidents, working to agreed service levels.

  • Provide clear advice and guidance to colleagues, explaining technical issues in simple terms.

  • Assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of IT equipment and applications.

  • Support project work, including hardware deployments, system upgrades, and digital initiatives.

  • Maintain accurate records of IT assets and ensure equipment is managed effectively.

  • Contribute to the delivery of a high-quality digital service that underpins safe and effective patient care.

As a Band 4 Service Technician within the Digital Services Team at Bedford Hospital, you will play a vital role in supporting the Trust’s IT systems and ensuring colleagues have the tools they need to deliver excellent patient care.

Main Responsibilities

  • Act as the first point of contact for IT support, responding to incidents and service requests in line with agreed service levels.

  • Diagnose and resolve issues with PCs, laptops, printers, mobile devices, Microsoft 365 and other Trust systems.

  • Log and track all calls via the IT service management system, keeping users updated throughout.

  • Provide clear advice and guidance to colleagues, explaining technical issues in simple terms.

  • Support the installation, configuration and maintenance of IT equipment and software.

  • Assist with IT projects, including hardware rollouts, system upgrades and digital transformation initiatives

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to A-Level / NVQ3 (or equivalent experience in an IT role)
Desirable criteria
  • ITIL Foundation qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in IT (formal or informal).
  • Knowledge of digital devices or platforms and their correct usage
  • Knowledge of Desktop operating systems such as Windows 7, Windows 10
  • Practical knowledge of PC or printer maintenance and support
  • Knowledge of service improvements/transformation and project management
  • Good Working knowledge of MS Office products
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience working in the NHS or another healthcare environment

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with a range of staffing groups including clinicians, nursing and managers
  • Advanced Keyboard Skills
  • Understanding of Information Governance, IT Security and confidentiality
  • Communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • High level of interpersonal skills, including active listening and understanding
  • Excellent communication skills — able to explain technical issues clearly to non-technical users.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within an NHS IT Department environment.
  • Knowledge & Experience working in an ITIL environment
  • Experience of supporting Digital devices or platforms within an acute Trust, including: - HP Hardware, Dell Hardware, MS Windows and MS Office
  • Knowledge of clinical or specialist applications used in healthcare

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Customer focussed with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Able to concentrate in a busy multi-purpose environment when checking information and when answering queries from staff, customers
  • Able to handle occasional exposure to emotional circumstances within the work place ie Service Calls pertaining to staff/patient issues where IT barriers need overcoming.
  • An aptitude for dealing with complex situations
  • Able to Handle IT equipment is an essential requirement.
