Job overview

This post/s are for a Nursing Associate based in Outpatients.  The successful candidate/s will be required to working flexibly over 7 days covering evenings & weekends in the near future although we currently work Monday – Friday.

The post-holder/s will be responsible for direct clinical care for individual patients and groups of patients within their area of work. After an agreed period, the post holder will be designated to co-ordinate the department with the supervision of RN’s  in the absence of the department Sister

The post holder will be responsible for running clinics efficiently and ensuring patients have a positive experience within our OPD department.

Although this post will be based in Outpatients, it will be primarily located in ENT & Cardiology OPD areas however, you will be expected to rotate to other OPD areas to support other specialties if required to meet the needs of the service. The post holder will be required to work flexible working times including evenings and weekends. Set days of working will not be authorised due to the flexibility of the service.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as a professional role model to junior staff and demonstrate leadership qualities.
  • Provide expert clinical knowledge and skills within the departments.
  • Work with the department manager and nursing team to develop and promote best nursing practice.
  • To coordinate the day-to-day running of clinics, assisting and supporting team members in all OPD areas.
  •  Prepare clinical areas for clinics including clinics primarily in ENT & Cardiology but to also be aware of other departments areas where rotation maybe required i.e, main OPD & Cauldwell and have an awareness and competence of the decontamination procedures and policies.
  • To be able to assist the clinicians in undertaking sterile procedures including minor procedure clinics, fine needle biopsies, core biopsies, and nasal endoscopes.
  • To be aware of and take responsibility for the appropriate and safe storage of substances hazardous to health i.e. formalin and liquid nitrogen.
  • To have an awareness of the HSSD track and trace systems and the importance of decontamination processes including Tristell Trio decontamination processes.
  • To be competent or working towards competency in wound dressings including VAC dressings and compression dressings only if required.
  • Maintain a high standard of clinical work when carrying out nursing procedures.
  • Responsible for the safe custody of medication, FP10 prescriptions including checking and administration & safe storage.

These position/s will be based within ENT & cardiology OPD areas  primarily however the posts may include the rotation to 4 other OPD areas including main outpatients & Cauldwell OPD areas.

You will be joining a team of both qualified nurses and clinical support workers who work in all areas which specialise in all medical and surgical conditions.

You will be expected to have an excellent knowledge of outpatient clinics and general knowledge of medical and surgical conditions. However a special interest or a willingness to increase knowledge in this speciality would be beneficial.

You will be responsible for the day to day coordination and management of Outpatient clinics utilising your organisational skills during the clinics and be responsible/ proficient in managing clinics ensuring patients receive a gold standard service.

You will be expected to be proficient or working towards proficiency in wound dressings i.e. compression & VAC dressings, ECG recording, minor operations procedures and have a wide knowledge of surgical and medical conditions.

You will be expected to become proficient in assisting with minor surgery clinics supporting the clinician and ensuring WHO checklist are completed as per trust policy if required after a period of supervision.

  • Experience with Dressings/Wound management
  • Experience in an Outpatient setting or similar setting.
  • Experience of outpatient’s clinic procedures and multiple conditions or similar experience.

  • Experience of Audit
