Job overview
An exiting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 paediatric nurse to join our team in Paediatric Outpatients, two days a week.
The department hosts a number of paediatric clinincs, including cardiac, respiratory, epilepsy, diabetes, jaundice to name a few.
Our paediatric phlebotomy service is also based within outpatients, as well as our ambulatory service where by children may attend for diagnostic tests or procedures.
We also run nurse led weekly pre assessment clinincs for those children who will be attending the inpatient unit for day surgery.
Main duties of the job
- Assessing and monitoring children’s physical, emotional and developmental needs.
- Supporting clinical procedures, investigations, treatments and medication administration.
- Providing reassurance and advocacy for children, young people and their carers.
- Safeguarding children and responding appropriately to welfare concerns.
- Coordinating care with paediatricians, specialists, community teams, schools and other professionals.
- Maintaining accurate records and following infection-control, confidentiality and clinical-governance standards.
- Assisting with phlebotomy
- Confidently lead on the delivery of the pre assessment clinic

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
GENERAL DUTIES:
· Be responsible for the safe and effective operational management of the outpatient Department.
· Be competent in delivering the phlebotomy service in the absence of the paediatric phlebotomist.
· Be able to competently assist with ambulatory procedures.
· Ensure nursing is practiced within the Clinical Governance Framework and create an environment in which excellence in care flourishes.
· Demonstrate effective leadership and staff management / development.
· To be clinically competent and contribute to direct patient care on a regular basis.
· Responsible for ensuring that appropriate assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of care are provided.
· To use evidence-based standards to support nursing care and monitor their implementation through proactive clinical audit.
· Support outpatient Lead in the development of clinical policies, protocols and procedures in the clinical area.
· Ensure that nursing practice is consistent with evidence based practice/clinical guidelines.
· Develop effective and robust communication systems within the department and other departments.
· Promote and maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients in line with the Circle’s Risk Management Strategy and Policies.
· Ensure the legibility and accuracy of patient/nursing records and monitor compliance with NMC standards for record keeping.
· Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients/clients.
· Ensure that nursing care is based on sound, current research, encourage and initiate/ lead nursing audits and assisting with the implementation of findings where appropriate.
· Ensure adherence to hospital policies, local guidelines and current legislation.
· Keep outpatient Lead & Paediatric Matron fully informed of changes in circumstances which may affect the delivery of care.
· To maintain good communications and working relationships with all health care professionals, patients, their relatives and carers.
TEACHING AND LEARNING:
1. Take a proactive role in ensuring that you receive feedback regarding personal and professional development, through regular appraisal and more informal methods.
2. Develop and maintain a professional portfolio in line with NMC guidelines
1. Set regular objectives for self-development, in line with ward/unit objectives, and ensure that relevant training is undertaken to meet development needs.
2. Undergo, where necessary, further training in relation to the Extended Role of the Nurse and participate in the training of others.
3. Take an active part in teaching programmes, both as teacher and learner, according to competence in relevant topics.
4. Following appropriate preparation, act as an associate or mentor to pre-registration nursing students.
5. Act as an effective role model for registered and unregistered staff in providing a positive clinical learning environment.
COMMUNICATION:
1. Regularly participate in ward meetings, team meetings and hospital - wide activities as required.
2. Ensure that messages are relayed to relevant staff/parents/children at all times.
3. Assist in the development and maintenance of effective mediums for communication to all members of staff in the ward.
