Job overview

Specialty Doctor - 10 Basic PAs plus 2 Additional Programmed Activities (for on call rota)

Applications are invited for the above post to commence as soon as possible for an initial period of 1 year with the potential of an extension or opportunity of a permanent position.

Applicants should have completed a minimum of 4 years full-time postgraduate training, at least 2 of which should be in a specialty training programme in Anaesthetics or have equivalent experience and be in possession of the Primary FRCA examination or Part I and II FRCA (or equivalent) or can demonstrate knowledge equivalent to Primary FRCA. The Final FRCA (or equiv) is desirable but not essential although it is hoped that this will be actively sought by the appointees. Applicants should be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council.

The appointee will join a department of over 42 Consultant 12 Specialty Doctors/Staff Grade Doctors or Trust Equivalent Doctors, 8 Specialty Trainees or Senior Clinical Fellows (ST3 and above), 6 MTI doctors, 4 core trainees and 6 ACCS trainees, 4 Clinical fellows, 2 IMT doctors, and 1 FY2 Doctor. The appointee will cover theatre lists, obstetric sessions and critical care sessions. The current pattern of out-of-hours work is a full shift covering obstetrics or emergencies or sometimes ICU. The exact pattern of work can be tailored to the individual appointee.  

 

Main duties of the job

The Specialty Doctor will join an experienced team of Consultants, SAS/ Specialty Doctors and trainees.

Depending on experience 

Provide anaesthetic services for routine and emergency surgery; provide cover in the Maternity Unit for the epidural in labour service,  elective and emergency maternity services including caesarean sections. 

Provide  anaesthetic service  IITU ,  the Cardiac Arrest and other emergency teams. When necessary they may be part of the transfer team, transferring patients to other hospitals.

Work under the supervision of and be responsible to the and Director appraiser of the Trust Doctors & SAS/Specialty Doctor

Visit pre operatively all patients and  be required to anaesthetise and carry out post-operative visits

Successful applicants will be supported in advancing their career. Dependant on individual requirements support is provided for entry onto the Specialist Register via the CESR or CCT route.

The  Hospital is a medium sized general hospital with approximately 660 inpatient beds. It serves a highly diverse geography close to London, is a highly performing Trust with flagship emergency services and a reputation for consistent operational and financial delivery.

The hospital provides a comprehensive range of general medical and surgical services, including Emergency Department and maternity services for people in Luton, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and parts of Buckinghamshire. Last year we provided healthcare services for over 90,000 admitted patients, over 400,000 outpatients and Emergency Department attendees and we delivered over 5,300 babies. 

The L&D has developed a range of specialist services including cancer, obesity, neurophysiology and oral maxillofacial (jaw) surgery.  We have the responsibility for treating the most premature and critically ill newborn babies across the whole of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire in our tertiary level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). We also have one of the country’s largest breast screening centres. 

All inpatient services and most outpatient services are provided on the Luton and Dunstable Hospital site. The Trust provides community musculo-skeletal services (MSK) at three locations across the catchment area, including our new Orthopaedic Centre and the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes services for South Bedfordshire.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS Medical Qualifications
  • Primary FRCA or Part I and II FRCA (or equivalent) or can demonstrate knowledge equivalent to Primary FRCA
  • Full GMC Registration (GMC licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
Desirable criteria
  • Final FRCA

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in anaesthetics equivalent to at least a minimum of four years full-time postgraduate training, at least two of which should be in a specialty training programme in Anaesthetics or have equivalent experience
  • Experience in Obstetric Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine
  • Good Practical Skills
  • Previous experience of working in intensive care medicine in the last 3 years
  • Evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in a relevant specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2/CT2 competences in a relevant specialty by the start date of the post
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of acquired skills
  • Up to date log book of training and experience
  • Exposure to working as an anaesthetist in the NHS

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills to undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
  • Evidence of interest and experience in teaching where required in the post

  • Evidence of experience in teaching
