Locum Consultant in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

Job overview

Applications are invited for this post in a friendly, forward-looking unit based at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital site. There are presently three Consultant Breast Surgeons (excluding this post) and an Associate Specialist providing a first-class breast surgery service to a population of over 300,000. Over 300 new breast cancers are treated every year.  Breast Service is based on the purpose-built Beds and Herts Breast Screening Centre, which provides screening services to a population of one million.

We are an extremely friendly and supportive unit, with good interpersonal relationships and a long-standing history of developing the unit in line with national guidance.

Candidates unable for personal reasons to work whole‑time are also encouraged to apply. A second subspecialty interest may be accommodated if it fits with the interests of the rest of the directorate but not essential. This is a teaching hospital of the University College London and an active teaching commitment is required. Formal training in Oncoplastic Surgery is expected.

Main duties of the job

We have introduced wireless localization (Localizer) and have in-theatre specimen X-rays. We support ultrasound training of surgeons; two surgeons are fully trained, a third is due to complete training shortly. We are linked to UEA (faculty on US training course) and run in-house training days for international and UK trainees. We provide a full spectrum of breast surgery including breast reconstructions with Lat Dorsi flaps and implants with access to ADMs and other meshes. Sentinel node biopsies are done with dual technique. We perform therapeutic mammoplasties with symmetrizing surgery. Joint operating is frequent to enable bilateral surgery and to support each other with challenging cases.  We carry out LICAPS, lipomodelling and nipple reconstructions. We have good relationships with our local plastic surgery team, a joint Oncoplastic MDT and joint lists. We have an extended, stable, surgical team for ward-rounds, pre-assessment and wound care, including the ‘Hospital at Home’ team who visit patients after discharge.
