Job overview

 A full time (10 PA) Consultant ENT Surgeon is required at Bedfordshire Hospitals to work with a supportive, dynamic & enthusiastic ENT team to help further develop services between Luton & Dunstable Hospital and Bedford Hospital. They should be able to manage all aspects of General Adult and Paediatric ENT but also have an appropriate sub-specialist interest to complement the activity of the department. 

 

The successful candidate will be an additional Consultant to the existing team of 10 Consultant ENT Surgeons (4 Based at Luton, 2 Based at Bedford and 4 working across both sites) who serve the population of Bedfordshire and surrounding areas. 

 

The on-call commitment is 1:6 week days covering Luton and Dunstable Hospital with prospective cover for annual and study leave.   Weekend on-call is 1:10 covering both Luton and Dunstable Hospital and Bedford Hospital

Main duties of the job

Key tasks:

 ·       Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients

·       presenting to the Hospital.

·       To provide and support colleagues with the management of all adult and paediatric

·       patients presenting with ENT conditions.

 

 In addition, the post-holder will have the following responsibilities

·       To develop close links with the ENT Team and undertake the responsibilities of outpatient ENT Clinics.

·       Teaching and training of intermediate grade and, junior medical staff, medical

·       students and ENT Nursing Staff.

·       To develop and lead Clinical Research in ENT with the support of Research & Ethic

·       Committee in the Trust.

·       To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical

·       Governance and audit.

·       To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification MRCS, FRCS (ORL-NHS) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register:  CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview)  CESR - portfolio pathway (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent all round experience of DGH work
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in ENT
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD
  • Experience of guideline appraisal
  • Participation in relevant local audits
  • Ability to interpret and apply clinical research
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in relevant national audits

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students
Desirable criteria
  • Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course

  • Ability to co-operate in a democratic team environment

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance

Personal Circumstances

Essential criteria
  • Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies
  • Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory occupational health clearance
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance
