Job overview

Ward 3 is a 21- bedded Respiratory Medical Ward delivering high quality of care to patients with acute and chronic respiratory conditions.  Our patient-focus involves patients with acute asthma, COPD, Pneumonia and lung disorders. 

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, vibrant and highly motivated Band 6 Nurse to join our team.

Patient safety and high quality of care are our top priority and this will need to be in the forefront of the successful applicant’s working mind. Examples of this would look like: continuous risk assessments of the patients and overall view of the ward and problem solve where issues arise.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a Band 6 who can demonstrate high standard of care and is looking to further develop their managerial and leadership skills. 

The successful applicant will work closely with the Ward Manager but would be expected to work independently within their own scope of practice, as well as in a team, whilst developing and supporting junior colleagues.  

You should be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience in looking after patients with acute and complex medical needs as well as evidence of operational management of an acute ward.

The position requires excellent leadership skills and an enthusiastic and committed approach in improving patient experience as we consistently strive to deliver excellent quality patient- centred care.  

You will be expected to work shift patterns including long days, nights, plus weekends and bank holidays.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support and work with the Ward Manager and Matron to provide effective unit management.

To take regular charge of the clinical area in the absence of the Ward Manager.

To take responsibility for the assessments of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of care to ensure the highest possible standards of care are received to patients.

To supervise and teach other nursing and non-nursing staff, acting as an excellent clinical role model and team leader to ensure quality care is delivered to patients.

Essential criteria
  • Current Registered Nurse with the NMC
  • Knowledge of recruiting and inducting new staff
  • Able to evidence recent and continuing professional development relevant to the department

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience of working in an acute hospital setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing a team and staff performance
  • Experience of managing staff capability, conduct and sickness absence at the early stages

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in mentoring students
Desirable criteria

  • Experience in delivering change
  • Knowledge of patient administration systems e.g. PAS
