Job overview

Applications are invited for the above post for this 660 bedded acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England).

This an exciting time to join the Imaging department at Luton & Dunstable Hospital, which has now merged with Bedford Hospital to form the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Imaging department has been rated excellent and well led by the CQC and an exemplar unit by GIRFT.

Bedfordshire hospitals imaging department is a friendly and cohesive team offering a high quality patient centred service with a broad range of specialities across the two sites.

We are looking for a dynamic radiologist with a progressive attitude, to support the local breast and chest services. This is a full-time post, but those wishing to work less-than full time will also be considered equally.

The post is primarily based at Luton Hospital, but there may be a requirement to cover session at Bedford, particularly during leave periods. Databases and participate in relevant Registries and research.

The applicant will also be expected to contribute to some of the general reporting workload and may also support MDTs with sufficient time for MDT preparation.

Home working is actively supported. All consultants have home reporting equipment including voice recognition software.

 

Main duties of the job

Beds & Herts Breast Screening Service is one of the largest breast screening services in the country serving most of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Medical staff include 5 breast radiologists (2 on SLAs from neighbouring Trusts), 6 breast physicians, 1 consultant radiographer, 1 consultant nurse, 3 advanced practice radiographers and 8 radiographer film readers. We are an enthusiastic, cohesive and compassionate team and we work closely with our 5 breast surgeons and our oncology team.  Two of our breast surgeons perform their own breast ultrasounds and biopsies and a third is currently training in this modality. We also have an international surgical fellow.

There is a weekly screening MDT where all patients who have undergone a biopsy are discussed.

We currently have 2 fixed screening units at the centre as well as 5 mobile screening units. There are also two FFD assessment units with tomosynthesis, one of which supports contrast enhanced mammography and 4 GE ultrasound machines. There is good access to MRI at the Luton and Dunstable site.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical Degree
  • FRCR or Equivalemt
Desirable criteria
  • MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register:  CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview)  CESR - portfolio pathway (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Breast General Radiology.
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.
  • Excellent all round experience of DGH work
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in other specialist imaging and involvement in other specialist MDT

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
  • Experience of guideline appraisal.
  • Participation in relevant local audits.
  • Ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
Desirable criteria
  • Participation in relevant national audits.

Personnel Circumstances

Essential criteria
  • Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies.
  • Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
Desirable criteria
  • Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.
