Job overview
This is an established post for a specialty doctor in acute medicine, at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. It can be full or part time.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team who believe in leading from the frontline, with the aim of providing outstanding care to our community, and investing in the well-being and development of our people.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will contribute to the provision of clinical care to patients admitted under acute medicine, including in AMU, SDEC, SSU, AECU and VACU.
The acute medicine team at the Royal Berkshire Hospital is forward thinking and dynamic, always willing to embrace new ways of working that benefit our patients. We have a strong team ethos, and our consultants have a wide range of special interests and second specialties. This fosters strong links with many areas of the hospital and allows for smooth and seamless care of our patients which this role will contribute to.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide, alongside the current team, the acute medicine service at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, including in-patient, same day emergency care and virtual acute care.
- Comply with the GMC requirements of the Duties of a Doctor at all times
Working for our organisation
The acute medicine department consists of the Acute Medical Unit with 46 beds, Short Stay Unit with 10 beds, Same Day Emergency Care Unit, Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit and a 7 bedded Higher Monitoring Unit (HMU). The HMU is where the most unwell medical patients are cared for outside of ICU, delivering continuous monitoring, 2:1 nursing and non-invasive respiratory support such as NIV and Nasal high flow oxygen.
In July 2021, we opened our Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC). All referrals to the medical take from the community, and an increasing number from the Emergency Department, are treated on a same day basis as the default. Driven by innovative ways of working and increased emphasis on flow, SDEC has doubled (from 20% to 40%) the number of patients referred to the medical take treated and discharged on the same day.
The Acute Medicine department is highly active in research, with our consultants being Principal Investigators for large international clinical trials, including the RECOVERY and REMAP CAP trials, for which a large cohort of patients were recruited form the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
The department is very strong in education and training. We have a dedicated Teaching Fellow, with weekly simulation sessions, plus junior doctor teaching and journal club. We host medical students from both Oxford and Southampton. Our junior doctors are able to complete the PGCert Med Ed at Reading University whilst working in acute medicine.

We are committed to equal opportunities and welcome applications from all sections of the community, regardless of any protected characteristics.
