Job overview
Applications are warmly welcomed to join a specialist multidisciplinary team contributing to the provision of our comprehensive geriatric medicine service. We are looking to appoint a Specialty Doctor to join the Elderly Care department in the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. This is a less than full time post (0.6 WTE) for a period of one year commencing August 2025, working predominantly with the Orthogeriatrics service.
The successful candidate will provide day to day medical care and review of patients on Emmer Green ward, and support the Orthogeriatric service.
The post-holder will have responsibility for the day-to-day care of the patients on Emmer Green ward. The ethos of each elderly care ward is holistic, patient centred care focussing on comprehensive geriatric assessment and multi-disciplinary team working. The successful candidates will be involved in reviewing patients who have sustained hip fractures outside of Emmer Green, and both the acute medical care and the discharge planning process of all of the patients on the ward.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will share clinical responsibilities with the ward team to
To provide, with colleagues, timely Comprehensive geriatric assessment, falls and bone health assessment on all patients with fractured neck of femur, distal femoral fractures and periprosthetic fractures in line with the best practice tariff.
To manage patients admitted from the Emergency Department to a dedicated hip fracture unit, overseeing their perioperative care and, with the multidisciplinary team manage their post-operative rehabilitation
Attend daily board rounds, Consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings
Work alongside the nursing & therapy teams and the rest of the MDT to help patients to achieve their maximum
Communicate with families of patients, especially those with cognitive impairment, regarding management plans and discharge destinations

Professional Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration
Desirable criteria
- Advanced Life Support certificate
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent
Clinical Experience & Skills
Essential criteria
- Experience in General and Geriatric Medicine
- Evidence of achievement of FY1&2 competencies or able to demonstrate achievement of the necessary equivalent competencies
Desirable criteria
- Minimum 1 year NHS experience.
- Experience in Orthogeriatrics.
Clinical Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Evidence of experience in acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take
Desirable criteria
- Specific management of geriatric syndromes including Dementia
Audit Management & IT
Essential criteria
- Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines.
- Undertake audits and present data as required.
- Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database.
Desirable criteria
- Completion of Quality Improvement Project
