Job overview

The Emergency Department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital is looking to recruit a locum consultant in Emergency Medicine for a fixed term period of 12months to cover maternity leave.

Our Emergency Department sees over 150 000 patients per year and approximately 25% of these are children.

The current department opened in 2002, with a dedicated paediatric area that opened in December 2010, with some subsequent extensions.

There are four resuscitation bays, (3 adult and 1 paediatric) equipped to provide state of the art care to critically ill and injured patients.

There are 20 majors assessment bays, a mental health assessment room and an ambulatory assessment area. There is an adjacent minor injury assessment unit with treatment bays and dedicated x-ray facilities staffed by emergency nurse practitioners from 07:00 to midnight every day.

The paediatric ED has recently been extended and now has 10 cubicles including one higher acuity bay where paediatric sedation can be performed safely and a dedicated waiting room.

We are developing a 10 bedded older persons assessment unit within the ED which is staffed with frailty practitioners and support from the interface geriatric team.

The department has consultant shop floor presence between 8 am and midnight every day supported by a registrar tier comprised of specialty trainees and SAS doctors. There is a full junior tier comprising resident doctors, Advanced Care Practitioners (ACPs) and Physician Associates (PAs).

Main duties of the job

The emergency medicine team at the Royal Berkshire Hospital (RBH) are actively seeking to recruit a locum consultant to join our team of 26 consultants to increase our consultant delivered care and ensure high quality care is delivered to all patients attending as emergencies. There will be an opportunity to pursue and develop other supporting roles including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research.

Candidates who are unable to work full time are eligible to apply and if successful modification of the job content will be discussed.
