Job overview

The post holder will provide support to the Delivery Suite team carrying out delegated tasks involving equipment and stock maintenance and ordering. This will include maintaining clinical equipment service logs, arranging testing for clinical and electrical equipment, evaluation of new equipment and ensuring process is followed for equipment repairs. They will also be responsible for ordering of clinical consumables for the department, ensuring stock levels are maintained and rotated.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Managerial

  1. Works as an effective team member. Understands the importance of team working in the delivery of high quality care. Demonstrates excellent communication with women, their families and the maternity team.

  2. Actively promotes diversity, including race diversity, and maintains an environment where there is equal opportunity and commitment to anti-discriminatory, anti-racist and anti-stereotyping practices.

  3. Works with the team to maintain high standards of cleanliness in the clinical area.

  4. Supports the Midwives and Matron to ensure the service practices within Data Protection/Confidentiality/Caldicott principles.

  5. Assists in the monitoring and maintenance of the health, safety and security of self and others in the work area. The post holder must ensure that he/she works within risk management, occupational health legislation and Trust procedures for safe working practices.


Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Undertakes specific skills such as checking and ensuring the clinical equipment is ready for use when required in the delivery suite. This follows completion of appropriate training and on instruction from Registered Midwife/Nurse or Clinical Engineering of the Manufacturer of the product.

  2. Records service histories and updates equipment service logs. Ensures all equipment undergoes required services either annually or as otherwise agreed/stipulated. Arranges PAC testing of all electrical equipment, maintains a log of this and liaises with clinical engineering.

  3. Assists with evaluation of new equipment with clinical engineering and clinical staff.

  4. Reports/sends all broken equipment to relevant departments, maintains the equipment log, and follows up on all equipment in repair process to ensure it is back to use or replaced if necessary ASAP.

  5. Orders all consumables across Delivery Suite to ensure correct supply, monitors deliveries, and follows up on undelivered items.

  6. Maintains stock control of all consumables – ensures stock rotation occurs, orders ward and community stocks from NHS supplies and as non-stock items. Maintains stock levels and keeps a non-stock item file for emergencies.

  7. Ensures consumables are within expiry date and safe to use.

  8. Communicates with the wider multi-disciplinary team and clinical staff regarding orders of supplies and equipment concerns.

  9. Receives and delivers information to senior staff in relation to stock management and equipment checks.

  10. Spot checks equipment in clinical areas to ensure readiness for use and cleanliness, ensuring appropriate cleaning (green) tags are attached.

  11. Ensures all stock/equipment is stored appropriately in accordance with infection control/fire regulations.

  12. Proficiently uses the procurement ordering system for clinical and non-clinical equipment and supplies.

  13. Condemns equipment that is not repairable and completes relevant documentation.

  14. Liaises with area leads/managers to escalate any safety issues, maintenance concerns or supply issues.

  15. With the support of senior midwives, prepares information for periodic stock level audits.


Teaching and Training

  • Under the supervision of a midwife, assists in the mentorship, support, training and development of junior colleagues.


Planning and Organisational Skills

  1. Acts as a completer-finisher; required to work to deadlines and deliver agreed objectives.

  2. Responds appropriately to unexpected events in order to maintain service delivery.


Other Responsibilities

  • Aware that the role includes exposure to biohazards and other potentially unpleasant materials, and takes responsibility for protecting themselves and others where appropriate through implementation of measures such as universal precautions and use of employer-supplied protective equipment/materials.
