This is a new 10PA post job share post for a Consultant Nephrologist with an interest in advanced kidney care, general nephrology and kidney transplantation at the Berkshire Kidney Unit. The post holder will work across the region and at both Royal Berkshire Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital.
The aim of the Berkshire Kidney Unit is as a leader in the field of Nephrology and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as teamwork, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.
The Berkshire Kidney Unit has recently been accredited by the University of Reading in recognition of our clinical, education and research excellence.
The Simulation date will be held on 18th November 2025 and the interview date is on the 3rd December 2025
Main duties of the job
Clinical Responsibilities:
- To deliver, with colleagues, a renal service in both in-patient and out-patient setting, and in clinical procedures to include kidney biopsy and tunnelled dialysis catheters across Berkshire.
2. To provide on-call cover for renal and physician of the day rotas
Management Responsibilities:
- Active participation in bi-monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.
- Participation and involvement in MDT and consultant meetings.
- Participation in activities contributing to service improvement, clinical research and education is encouraged

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Foundation Trust, the Berkshire Kidney Unit provides a comprehensive renal service including acute and chronic dialysis and transplant follow-up for the whole of Berkshire. There are over 900 renal replacement patients and 70 haemodialysis stations on our main and satellite sites. The Trust has a renal strategy committed to service development on both the acute site and across the county.
The current consultant team work closely together with shared policies and protocols, constantly developing the service. The unit is highly computerised, with an ethos that is firmly multi-disciplinary and strongly driven towards UK Kidney Association standards by rigorous frequent audit. The post-holder will be expected to embrace the culture of the unit, and of the trust, and work enthusiastically and closely with the existing team to manage and develop the service.
Participation in research, teaching and quality improvement will be expected and development of particular areas of interest will be encouraged and supported.
The Trust is committed to supporting the requirements for continuing education and professional development as laid down by the Royal Colleges. A personal development review will be undertaken by the clinical area lead annually and objectives agreed.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration Within 6 months of CCST in (Speciality) at interview date
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree e.g. PhD/ MD submitted/awarded
Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Fully trained in nephrology
- Previous responsibility for clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice
- All aspects of general medicine and patient care
Audit Management & IT
Essential criteria
- Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines
- Undertake audits and present data as required
- Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce

- Track record of publications in peer reviewed journals
