Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team of consultants who believe in leading from the frontline, with the aim of providing outstanding care to our community and investing in the well-being and development of our people.

The post holder will be expected to hold accreditation in advanced Obstetric scanning. Ideally the candidate will have accreditation in Fetal Medicine/Pre-natal diagnosis or Fetal Care. The role is to support the fetal wellbeing services including high risk screening, SGA, preterm, multiple pregnancy and congenital abnormalities and fetal-maternal antenatal clinics. The post holder will also lead the Bereavement service including those with pregnancy loss from congenital abnormalities.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities:

·         Support the fetal wellbeing services

·         Provide acute and elective services in Obstetrics including specialist scan clinics, Delivery Suite, Antenatal clinics, MAU and Antenatal ward rounds and Caesarean Section lists.

·         Ensure patient confidentiality is maintained at all times

·         Comply with the GMC requirements of Duties of a Doctor at all times

Management Responsibilities:

·         Leading the Bereavement service and working in tandem with bereavement midwives

·         Participation and involvement in monthly meetings including governance and other departmental business

·         Active participation in departmental teaching such as PROMPT and SBL forum etc, as well as teaching medical students, PA students etc and resident doctors

·         Supporting FM and Obstetric trainees

·         Guideline updates and service improvement work

The hospital provides all those services normally associated with a very large District General Hospital. The hospital provides services on a single site for all the major specialities including Accident and Emergency, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Intensive Care, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Genitourinary Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT, Maxillo-Facial surgery, Paediatrics (including a NICU), general medicine (including all major medical specialities including CCU, Renal Unit, ITU and gastroenterology), radiotherapy and oncology, and all the general surgical specialities.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a full time post with a minimum of 10 PAs. This job includes resident obstetrics including overnight and non-resident obstetric working out of hour. The appointee will have a varied timetable of delivery suite, elective caesarean sections and antenatal clinics, antenatal wards including MAU and specialist scan clinics. A final job plan will be agreed upon appointment, ensuring both individual and Trust / departmental objectives align.

The balance between Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional Activities will be agreed with the post holder in the final job plan.  The SPA allocation is 1.5 for personal CME, audit and revalidation requirements including departmental meetings. Additional Pas (APAs) may be allocated for specific agreed objectives for the trust subject to the agreement of the Clinical Director.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MRCOG (UK) or equivalent
  • Relevant CCT

Clinical Experience, Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Fully trained in advanced Obstetric scanning (or equivalent)
  • Fully trained/ATSM/SITM in Fetal Medicine/Pre-natal Diagnosis/Fetal Care/Premature Birth Prevention (or equivalent)
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in O&G
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Evidence of competence in management of obstetric and gynaecological emergencies and in-patients through continuous work-based assessments, portfolio evidence, including log book documentation if applicable
  • Evidence of competence to work without direct supervision where appropriate
  • Demonstrate current ALS certification or equivalent
  • Demonstrates ability in managing common acute and chronic conditions, including emergencies
  • Certification in PROMPT

Audit Management and IT

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines
  • Undertake audits and present data as required
  • Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of clinical and / or digital leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce

Research, Teaching Skill and Experience

  • Track record of publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Evidence or providing good teaching and supervision to trainees
