Job overview

This 12 month post is an excellent opportunity for candidates to work as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Medical Education (40%) whilst gaining clinical experience in Paediatrics (60%). All training will take place at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The Royal Berkshire Hospital hosts students from both the University of Oxford and the University of Southampton, in addition to Physician Associate students from the University of Reading. From September 2024, the Trust will welcome its first cohort of students from Brunel Medical School.  This post has been established to enhance the teaching of students and maintain the Royal Berkshire Hospital’s reputation as a centre of excellence for medical education. 

The successful applicant must have a license to practice from the GMC, and ideally completed core training and hold MRCPCH.  Applicants with at least 2 years NHS post-graduate experience and a strong interest in medical education will be considered.

40% of the post holder’s time will be spent on teaching activities with the remaining 60% of time spent doing clinical work, including relevant on call rota.

All teaching fellows will have access to a tutor who will provide mentorship with educational projects as well as an educational supervisor.

Main duties of the job

Undergraduate Teaching

The post will be tailored to the successful applicant and their specific interests and the roles could include any of the following;

  • Responsibility for facilitating the medical attachments and placements of medical students
  • This will include production of teaching resources and delivery of formal teaching sessions.
  • Helping develop and adapt existing teaching models and courses for medical students
  • Taking on a leadership and mentorship role for medical students and providing a forum to give feedback and help develop and enhance their learning and well being
  • Engage in quality improving projects and developing potential teaching courses.
  • Bedside teaching including demonstration of clinical signs and examination
  • Coordinating student timetabling
  • Contribute to running and developing simulation sessions for Medical Students and liaising with the department of Simulation.
  • Assisting the Undergraduate Managers in delivering key medical student inductions

Working for our organisation

The Royal Berkshire Hospital Paediatric Department covers a large child population of around 125,000 and 5800 deliveries. Dingley Specialist Children’s Centre provides multidisciplinary community services alongside experienced allied health professionals and specialist nurses. We cover the West of Berkshire which includes Wokingham, Reading and West Berkshire. The paediatric department consists of

  • 2 childrens inpatient wards (Lion & Dolphin) consisting of 5 HDU beds and 39 beds/cots
  • Kempton (Paediatric) Day Assessment Unit consisting of ten beds
  • Paediatric observation bay
  • Local neonatal unit (Buscot ward) for babies >27 weeks gestation and 800g birthweight – 20 cots including 3 intensive care and 5 high dependency cots
  • Paediatric emergency department
  • Childrens outpatient clinic
  • Dingley Child Development Centre

There are a total of 24 Consultants, 18 in the Acute Hospital setting and 6 Community Based.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main clinical duties of the job

  • Day to day clinical management of children on the two acute children’s wards, Dolphin and Lion, including medical aspects of surgical patients and close liaison with doctors involved from other specialties     
  • Cover for paediatric problems on the Paediatric Accident & Emergency Unit.
  • Middle grade cover for the neonatal unit
  • Providing cover for all acute paediatric referrals from any source.
  • Supervision and teaching of the ST1-ST3 doctors on the Acute Children’s Wards and the Paediatric Day Bed Unit.
  • Out of hours, nights and weekends cover both neonatal and general paediatrics.
  • triage, assess, and manage CYP admitted to Observation bay.
  • Responsible for discharge and subsequent care planning of CYP from observation bay to their home, acute ward or other medical professionals.
