Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse (Pre-Op Assessment)
**This is a fixed-term/secondment opportunity for 14 months to cover maternity leave.**
The team provide optimisation for up to 350 pre-op T&O, urology, general surgical and gynaecology patients each week.
The senior role also includes additional roles of coordinator, mentorship, appraisals and general support for the team in support of department senior team.
Main duties of the job
To work as a skilled practitioner and also responsible for undertaking a robust patient-focused health/nursing needs assessment and patient history according to set criteria, assessing, recognising and escalating any actual and potential risks to patient, giving appropriate advice/information regarding preparation for surgery and for the maintenance of associated records for patients in the given clinical area.
To ensure the smooth running of the Ward/Department in the absence of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, and provide clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff.
The post holder will be able to undertake the role of coordinater, to facilitate and support colleagues in the checking and interpretation of patient results, taking appropriate timely action as required and escalating/referring on appropriately to Anaesthetists/Surgeons/Specialist Clinicians and/or GP’s, Clinical Administration Teams (as per agreed criteria).
Clinical competencies to include venepuncture, observations & swabs, urine processing and ECG in support of the HCA group.

- Registered Nurse (Pt 1/12) ((RSCN (Pt 8)) if appropriate
- Evidence of post qualification Decision Making, Advanced Assessment &/or History Taking modules or equivalent experience
- ENB 998/Slice, C&G 730, Mentorship or SSSA
- Evidence of Leadership/Management and Speciality Development
- Post-qualification experience, including in speciality
Desirable criteria
- Experience of involvement in successful Change Management
- Demonstrates ability to think laterally, creatively and innovatively to enhance patient care
