Band 3 Apprentice Therapeutic Radiographer (3 Years)

PLEASE NOTE: Sponsorship is not normally available for this vacancy - applicants must have the right-to-work in the UK for this role by their proposed start date (and continued right-to-work for the duration of the three-year course).

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Berkshire Cancer Centre as an Apprentice Therapeutic Radiographer whilst undertaking the BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography Degree Apprenticeship delivered by the University of Hertfordshire.

The successful candidate will be employed by Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust and supported to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become a registered Therapeutic Radiographer.

This three-year apprenticeship combines degree-level study with supervised clinical training across our Radiotherapy services in Reading and Bracknell. The programme commences in January 2027 through the University of Hertfordshire.

We welcome applications from all, including school and college leavers, healthcare support workers, graduates and those seeking a career change who meet the University entry requirements.

Main duties of the job

Important information before applying: Applicants must be able to travel regularly to all required clinical and academic locations and should live within a reasonable commuting distance of Reading.

Applicants must meet the entry requirements for the University of Hertfordshire Degree Apprenticeship programme.

As an Apprentice Therapeutic Radiographer, you will undertake this Degree Apprenticeship delivered by the University of Hertfordshire whilst employed by Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. You will participate fully in academic and clinical learning activities, developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to provide safe, accurate and compassionate radiotherapy care to patients affected by cancer.

Working under the supervision of qualified Therapeutic Radiographers and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will gain experience in patient care, radiotherapy imaging, treatment preparation, planning, quality assurance and treatment delivery. You will be expected to successfully complete all academic modules, clinical competencies and apprenticeship requirements.

You will work in accordance with Trust policies, HCPC Standards of Proficiency, IR(ME)R regulations and relevant professional codes of conduct, whilst demonstrating the Trust CARE values and contributing positively to patient care and the wider department.

The successful candidate will receive a minimum of 20% protected off-the-job learning time alongside dedicated support.

Working for our organisation

This is a demanding but highly rewarding programme combining full-time employment within a busy cancer service with degree-level study. Applicants should demonstrate the motivation, organisation and resilience required to balance academic, clinical and personal commitments successfully throughout the apprenticeship.

We anticipate a high volume of applications and reserve the right to close this vacancy early should sufficient applications be received. Early application is strongly encouraged.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be enrolled on the BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography Degree Apprenticeship Programme delivered by the University of Hertfordshire, which leads to eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Therapeutic Radiographer following successful completion of the programme.

Training and education will take place across:

  • Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading
  • Royal Berkshire Bracknell Healthspace
  • University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield

The apprentice will receive structured academic teaching, supervised clinical training, workplace-based learning and protected study time throughout the programme. They will progressively develop competence across all aspects of radiotherapy practice, including communication, patient-centred care, treatment preparation, treatment planning, radiotherapy imaging, treatment delivery and professional practice.

Applicants should understand that annual leave must be arranged around mandatory university teaching, assessments and clinical training requirements.

We strongly encourage prospective applicants to arrange an informal discussion or departmental visit before applying to gain a greater understanding of the profession, apprenticeship requirements, travel expectations and the realities of working within a modern radiotherapy service.

All applicants must satisfy both Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust recruitment requirements and the University of Hertfordshire entry requirements for the Therapeutic Radiography Degree Apprenticeship programme. All offers will be subject to satisfactory references, DBS clearance, occupational health clearance and confirmation of eligibility to enrol with the University.

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, achievement of the degree qualification and HCPC registration, opportunities may be available to apply for Band 5 Therapeutic Radiographer posts within the department, subject to recruitment processes and vacancies available at the time.
