Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team who believe in leading from the frontline, with the aim of providing outstanding care to our community and investing in the well-being and development of our people.
This is a replacement post to due to the retirement of one of our Consultant Respiratory physician colleagues and will enable us to continue to meet the demands of an increasing in and out-patient workload.
We take pride in being a very functional and supportive department with a clear vision to provide the best respiratory care possible to our patients. We would welcome candidates with defined sub-specialty expertise but also those candidates prepared to develop a sub-specialty area of expertise complementary to those within the department.
The simulation date will be 24/8/26 and the interview date will be 08/09/2026.
Main duties of the job
This is a 10 PA post for a Consultant Respiratory physician at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, with a general interest in respiratory medicine and a focus on both Sleep and ventilation and airways disease. The advent of biologics for COPD will drive the need for increased clinic time to assess patients for suitability for biologics. The job will comprise a mixture of inpatient care and outpatient clinics and MDT working, along with the options for day case interventional lists in pleural, bronchoscopy and EBUS. Successful applicants will be supported in developing the service according to their experience. There will be considerable opportunity to be involved in service development, participation in clinical research and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities:
Activity will be predominantly based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, with a weekly outpatient clinic taking place at West Berkshire Community Hospital. There is the option to discuss clinics at one of our other spoke sites as well. Specific responsibilities will include the following, although there is flexibility in this that can be discussed upon appointment:
Outpatient activities:
- 1 weekly Sleep/ventilation clinic at RBH, 1 weekly general clinic at WBCH and 1 weekly general clinic either at RBH or spoke site.
- Integrated care offering to primary care /airways disease clinic / MDT bi monthly
- Weekly participation in the decision-to-treat lung cancer MDT
- Participation in the EBUS and bronchoscopy rota
- Involvement in the development of COPD biologics clinics
Inpatients and on-call
- Managing the specialist respiratory inpatient ward and referrals on a rotational basis (currently 4 weeks in 18). Outpatient commitments are cancelled when covering inpatients.
- Contribution to the respiratory of the day (ROD) rota.
- Weekend cover of the respiratory ward; 08.30-14.30 – reviewing new patients to the ward, patients on the RSU, sick patients flagged by the nursing staff. Resident cover (2 resident doctors) is provided from 08.30-17.30 for the respiratory ward at the weekend.
- Supervision and education of ward junior doctors and final year medical students, with on-the-job clinical teaching
- Participation in the general medicine on call. Full time equivalent frequency is as below.
- 1:24 weekdays
- 15.00 -22.30, on-site, including post-take reviews, overnight- non-residential
- The general medical on-call weekend rota is also at a 1 in 24 frequency, on site 0800-20.00 both Saturday and Sunday with overnight non-residential on call.
Management Responsibilities:
The post holder will have active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings and business meetings within the department. The appointee will, with the other consultants share in the general management of the department. The appointee may want to consider taking on one of the departmental management roles.
The appointee will be offered a mentor or coach on appointment. The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust has a mentoring/coaching support programme for all new Consultant appointments.

Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom or equivalent
- Fully trained in Respiratory and GiM
Desirable criteria
- Clinical fellowship / chief registrar year
Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Fully trained in Respiratory and GiM
- Experience of working in the NHS at SpR or Consultant level
- Fully trained in Bronchoscopy and EBUS
Teaching Skill & Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence or providing good teaching and supervision to trainees
