This is a full time post for a Consultant Stroke Physician and Geriatrician at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
This is an exciting new post created by and demonstrating the close relationships between the Acute Stroke and Elderly Care services at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Applications are warmly welcomed to join the specialist multidisciplinary teams contributing to the provision of our Hyperacute Stroke and Comprehensive Geriatric Medicine services. We are looking to appoint one Consultant Geriatrician to join our dynamic and enthusiastic teams.
Please note the simulation date is 23/6/26 and the interview date will be 8/7/26.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work with the team of 4 existing stroke consultants and 5 neurologists to deliver 24/7 thrombolysis service, 7 day hyper acute TIA service, stroke clinics and managing patients in HASU/ASU. The post will include participation in the stroke on call rota at approximately 1:9.
The Elderly Care component of the post will involve working on one of the Acute Elderly Care wards in the elderly medicine department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, in rotation with our Orthogeriatric service. Whilst working within Elderly Care, the appointee will be primarily responsible for 14 patients on the ward, also providing prospective cover for their colleague managing the remainder of the ward. The Orthogeriatric component of the post will include time either on our dedicated hip fracture unit (Emmer Green) or liaison work with the trauma & Orthopaedic team. We have a twice monthly outpatient clinic at one of our satellite hospitals, predominantly for general geriatric medicine outpatients but there would be an opportunity to develop a specialist interest.
This position will be a 10 PA consultant post in Stroke and Elderly Care Medicine. As a forward thinking and adaptable department, we would welcome applications from candidates wishing to work less than full time. The post will include participation in the Hyperacute Stroke rota at 1:9 and Elderly Care Physician Of the Day (ECPOD) on call rota at approximately 1:32.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities:
The post holder will be expected to:
- To provide, with colleagues, hyper acute stroke management (intravenous thrombolysis, hyper acute TIA and HASU ward round) for patients admitted under the care of the stroke team.
- To manage the patients on an acute stroke unit, working closely with colleagues in the multidisciplinary team and providing consultant support to the medical team.
- Enhance and support outpatient stroke clinics, focusing on secondary prevention and life after stroke, at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and two of our satellite hospitals (West Berkshire Community Hospital and Townlands Memorial Hospital).
- To provide on-call cover for stroke on a 1 in 8 rota. On-call is Category B with 5% on-call intensity supplement.
- Prospective cover for each other’s annual leave will be shared equally between the consultant team
- Provide clinical advise and support to the stroke CNS team
- To provide, with colleagues, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment service for frail older patients admitted under the care of the Elderly Care team.
- To manage the patients on an acute Elderly Care ward, working closely with colleagues in the multidisciplinary team and providing consultant support to the medical team.
- Enhance and support our multidisciplinary outpatient services, provided by the Elderly Care department with a regular outpatient clinic, focusing on general Elderly Care patients with an opportunity to develop a specialist interest at one of our satellite hospitals.
- To provide on-call cover for the Elderly Care Physician (ECPOD) on call on a 1 in 32 rota. On-call is Category A with 3% on-call intensity supplement. Specific fixed weekday to be confirmed.
- Prospective cover for each other’s annual leave will be shared equally between the consultant team and often involves cover of the inpatient wards
Management Responsibilities:
- Active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the department.
- Participation and involvement in meetings and other business in the Stroke & Elderly Care services
- Responsibility for the educational supervision and clinical supervision of trainee doctors, and participation in the training of medical students and student physician associates.
- An expectation that the appointee will assume responsibility for an area of specialism or interest within the Trust after commencement in the post.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration Within 6 months of CCST in geriatric medicine and stroke at interview date
- Membership of the Royal College of Geriatric Medicine of the United Kingdom or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree e.g. PhD/ MD submitted/awarded
Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria
- Fully trained in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine
- Sub-specialty experience in Stroke Medicine including hyperacute services including delivering thrombolysis & thrombectomy
- Ability to make decisions at consultant level
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge/experience of geriatric medicine and stroke outpatient services
Personal Qualities and Experience
Essential criteria
- Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team, understanding each other’s unique role
- Evidence or providing good teaching and supervision to trainees
- Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of clinical leadership role demonstrating accountability for quality of care, financial controls and efficient management of workforce
