Specialist Speech & Language Therapist – Neuro Lead

Are you an experienced B7 looking for a change? or a B6 looking to take the next step in their career? The SLT service at the Royal Berkshire Hospital has a great opportunity for you!

We are looking for a new team lead for our neurology service. Well respected within the hospital and maintaining a "B" in their SSNAP rating, we are always looking to develop and evolve our therapy provision. Within the last year we have introduced Biozoon and are soon taking delivery of our recently purchased Phagenyx equipment. 

Leading a Team of 2 x B6, 1 x B5 and 2 x 0.5 SLTAs you will be responsible for the ongoing support and development of the acute stroke service at the RBH and the Neuro Rehabilitation Unit in West Berkshire Community Hospital, as well as delivering highly specialist clinical sessions. 

We take your support and development seriously and have a rolling programme of training for instrumental assessment (FEES and VF) as well as access to a number of specialist clinicians in critical care, acute, Head and Neck and ENT.   We prioritise your well-being and supervision and regularly access external training to suppport your development.

The  Neurology Lead role is varied and allows you to get the both of best worlds with an Acute Stroke Unit and HASU for and a 10 bedded level 2 Neuro Rehab Unit.

The role is responsible for ongoing support and development of the Neurology SLT service including (amongst others):

  • Provision of specialised communication and dysphagia assessment and therapy for patients with stroke and acquired neurological condidtions.
  • Support and supervision of SLT team.
  • Maintaining close working relationships with MDT leads.
  • Ensuring appropriate training and development needs identified within the service.
  • Ongoing delivery of dedicated FEES service.
  • Development of new service initiatives.
  • Attendance at Stroke Clinical Governance and Stroke Business meetings.

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent Licence to Practice.
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Member of HCPC in good standing

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills
  • Highly developed negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Excellent presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Knowledge of national policies and procedures both NHS, Government and local Authority
  • Knowledge of relevant procedures and other relevant legal frameworks including Safeguarding Adults, Mental Capacity Act
  • Understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group)

Previous experience

  • Relevant specialist experience post qualification
  • Experience of working with complex acute inpatient cases
  • Well-established knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools relevant to the specialist client group
  • In-depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions (relevant to the client group) and an ability to weigh-up relative benefits
  • Experience in employing highly specialist interventions for patients and carers who have severe disability and/or terminal illness on a daily basis; and evaluate outcomes
  • Experience in developing and delivering training packages to other disciplines, carers and service users
  • Experience in inter-agency working
  • Experience in supervising other Speech & Language Therapists and students
  • Experience in changing own practice
