We have an exciting opportunity at Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS foundation trust for Locum specialty doctor with special interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology. This post has become available through the retirement of the current post-holder. The post will be mainly based at Prince Charles eye unit at Windsor.

This post is part time (8PA's) and the candidate is expected to working with other Consultant Ophthalmologist colleagues. This post involves active participation in the busy Paediatric Ophthalmology service at PCEU including paediatric ophthalmology clinic, refractions and casualty clinics. There is no regular commitment for theatre lists. However this can be considered as an option depending on surgical experience of candidate.

The Paediatric Ophthalmology service has an experienced team of Orthoptists, Optometrists & Nurses from whom the successful candidate will have full support. GMC Registration with a license to practice is essential.

The Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

 

·     Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular discussions with colleagues

·     Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting

·     Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)

·     Experience in full management of Paediatric outpatient clinics, squint surgeries, paediatric refraction & ocular motility tests independently is expected from the candidate.

·     Experience in general ophthalmology is mandatory for this post.

·     Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity

·     Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education

·     Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances

Clinical Duties:

The candidate should be able to

1.     Demonstrate competency in diagnosis, investigation and management of paediatric ophthalmic patients in outpatients, inpatients and emergency settings.

2.     Have advanced skills to assess vision in children of all developmental ages, and assess and manage refractive error, squint and amblyopia.

3.     Understand and be able to order (or refer to specialist services) appropriate tests including metabolic tests, genetic tests and electro-diagnostic tests.

4.     Diagnose and plan management of nystagmus in children

5.     Manage eye and vision problems relating to brain damage and cerebral visual impairment (such as those caused by premature birth or birth trauma).

6.     Co-manage paediatric, glaucoma, corneal and retinal disease and paediatric uveitis with appropriate specialists.

7.     Confidently examine and diagnose babies referred with absent red reflex and non accidental trauma.

8.     Recognise and refer patients who will benefit from more specialist input.

9.     Use highly developed consultation skills efficiently to manage busy clinics whilst managing Patient expectations.

10.   Assist with decision-making where there are cognitive impairment barriers, employing

Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA) services or equivalent if necessary

11.   Ability to perform paediatric squint surgery independently is desirable but not essential.
