Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Permanent  Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join us working within an integrated team delivering care to People with Learning Disabilities.

The successful applicant will manage a varied caseload, both communication and dysphagia, with the support and guidance of senior clinicians. Multidisciplinary working and a patient centred approach is integral to meeting the patients’ needs and there is ample opportunity to be involved in service development. Previous experience in learning disabilities is not essential as professional development and clinical supervision are given high priority.

 

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be an integral member of the multidisciplinary team based within our  Community Hubs . Clinical support and supervision will be available from within the Speech and Language Therapy Team. The post holder will also receive managerial supervision and support from within the multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications / training

Essential criteria
  • First degree in SLT and/or Masters post-graduate qualification relevant to SLT
  • HCPC Licence to practise
  • Registered with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Prepared to work to Trust competency programme including dysphagia, where appropriate.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Work-based experience at undergraduate/ postgraduate level.
  • Additional experience outside of SLT relevant to client group eg teaching.
  • Observation/experience of cases who have dysphagia.

Skills/knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Has knowledge of assessment, diagnosis and intervention strategies of a wide range of clinical areas covered by SLT degree.
  • Has knowledge of the communication and swallowing needs of a diverse population.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work with a range of clients and carers under supervision.
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and is able to overcome barriers to communication.
  • Is able to write clear notes and reports to a professional standard.
  • Is aware of the risks of clinical practice eg personal safety.
  • Is IT literate and able to use basic software eg Outlook
  • Understands the importance of team working.

Personal qualities

Essential criteria
  • Can prioritise own workload and has insight into own coping strategies in stressful situations.
  • Is able to reflect on own clinical practice and initiate appropriate changes.

Other job requirements

Essential criteria
  • Is able and willing to move around the city.
  • Is able to carry a variety of equipment between locations safely.
  • Is able to work in various locations according to needs of clients.
