Job overview

West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre is a tertiary prosthetic centre, providing a full range of advice and prosthetic rehabilitation for all levels of upper and lower limb loss including paediatric services. The centre is also one of the Veteran service centres, providing an enhanced service to veterans who have lost a limb in the service of their country. 

The service is delivered at West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre and at two secondary centres located in Wolverhampton and Stoke-On-Trent, plus a small number of satellite clinics located across the region; this post will support the Wolverhampton contract.

Prosthetic/ Orthotic Assistant Technician provides technical input to the Prosthetic/ Orthotic Service at West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre, and the satellite clinics.

The Prosthetic/ Orthotic Assistant Technician provides technical skills and support to ensure the highest quality Prosthetic/Orthotic Service is delivered to patients, through close liaison with the clinical and non-clinical team.

 

Main duties of the job

Manufacturing and adjusting prostheses/ orthoses

The post holder must be fully conversant in the use of equipment within the clinical and technical environment that is used to treat patients and to manufacture and adjust prostheses.

Responsible for completing repair schedules in a timely manner as allocated by the workshop manager, working and communicating as an integral member of the clinical and non-clinical team.

Works independently and follows policies, procedures and quality system manuals. Work is managed rather than supervised.

Make a positive contribution to service development, improvement and performance to ensure efficient and effective outcomes for colleagues and patients.

Qualifications / training

Essential criteria
  • HND Level 5 or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience acquired through formal training
  • Relevant experience in a technical service offering support to clients with equipment
  • Relevant experience of complex assembly with all major components and/or overhauling components
  • Relevant experience of analyzing problems and solutions
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant experience in the production and finishing prostheses/ orthoses, both mechanical/ electronic hardware, and facsimile orthoses

Skills/knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the range of componentry used within prosthetic/ orthotic services
  • Skills of working in manufacturing environment, with good hand skills. Good use of hand tools (eg. drills, hammers etc.)
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety and Risk Management
  • Highly developed hand skills, where a degree of precision and speed are required, as well as good levels of hand, eye, and sensory co-ordination.
