Job overview

This new additional post is full-time, maximum part-time or part-time as agreed and will be subject to the Consultant Contract (October 2003) and the Terms and Conditions of Service governing the appointment of hospital medical and dental staff in England or as subsequently varied by collective agreement. The post may be available as a job share.  The appointment will be under the employment of the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. 

The post supports the community clinic and hospital radiology services with the post holder being based at the dental hospital.

The x-ray Department provides radiographic support and acts as the Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) for the Dental Outreach Clinic (Boots) and the X-ray bays in the clinical departments.

The Radiology Department provides a full radiographic service for the Dental Hospital.  In the main department, approximately 90–120 patients undergo a radiographic examination each day, mostly routine intra-oral and extra-oral radiography. The Department is fully digital with a backup CR Extra Oral machine for clinical and student teaching.

Main duties of the job

Provide high quality teaching for dental undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Divisional Medical Director of the Dental Hospital.

Act as an Educational Supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Lead/Divisional Medical Director to ensure external accreditation of any training posts.

Where possible to collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s research portfolio, always meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.

Work with radiography, dental, dental nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure operational efficiency e.g., waiting list activity and demand management.

Work closely with the Group Clinical Manager, Matron and the Clinical Service Manager (Radiology) to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the department.

Participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.

Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.

Participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and the Trust, where appropriate.

Represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Divisional Medical Director.

Demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical Trust activities and when participating in national or local initiatives.

Working for our organisation

The Birmingham Dental Hospital is an undergraduate dental teaching hospital that shares purpose built accommodation with the School of Dentistry of the University of Birmingham. It is sited in  purpose built premises close to the main university campus in Edgbaston, and there are good transport links to the city centre and main railway station. The Dental Hospital provides an outpatient and day case service with approximately 130,000 patient attendances per annum.

All dental specialties are represented within the hospital building by consultant clinics and/or university teaching departments. Excellent liaison exists with clinical and laboratory departments associated with
the main medical teaching hospitals in Birmingham. A comprehensive range of investigative and report services are available.

Birmingham Dental Hospital forms part of the Dental Services Directorate which is integrated with the Community Services within the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In collaboration with the Divisional Medical Director, Clinical Lead and the Clinical Service Manager start to plan the Development of a Higher Specialist Training Programme in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology.

Act as Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) for the Dental Hospital, the Dental Outreach Clinic in the City Centre.  Appropriate training will be provided if needed with update training through the Regional Radiation Physics and Protection Service (RRPPS) at University Hospitals Birmingham.

Provide advice, where appropriate, for staff within the Radiology Department and at other sites where x-ray equipment is used within Birmingham Dental Hospital and Dental Outreach Clinic.

Liaise closely with the Trust’s Radiation Protection Advisor and Medical Physics Expert as required by the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017.

Have a responsibility for and oversee the running of and implementation of the undergraduate course in dental radiography and radiology.  Including undertaking student assessments, monitoring student progress and participate as an examiner in University of Birmingham’s examinations and student tests.

Work closely with University of Birmingham’s Tutor Radiographer.

Qualifications / Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GDC Registration.
  • Registered specialist in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (or within 6 months of CCST) with DDMFR Royal College of Radiologists or equivalent.
  • Possession of a certificate of Accreditation or Completion of Specialist Training in DMFR or within 6 months of obtaining a CCST at time of interview.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher academic degree relevant to Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, MSc, PhD etc.
  • One, or more of the following or equivalent qualifications: FDS RCS, MFDS RCS.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Successful completion of an SAC approved 4 year minimum training programme in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, or within 6 months of completion.
  • Recent ultrasound imaging experience.
  • Recent CBCT reporting experience.
  • Contribution to guidelines or protocols for Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology.
  • Experience of contributing to a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable criteria
  • Substantial clinical experience as a Consultant in the NHS.

Audit and IT Management

Essential criteria
  • An understanding of clinical governance and risk management in the secondary care setting.
  • Management skills and effective leadership for the NHS environment and clinical service delivery.
  • Effective participation in audit, including implementation of outcomes.
  • Good IT skills.

Research and Teaching Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience of organisation and clinical supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
  • Evidence of teaching courses and/or teaching qualifications.

  • Experience of providing training in the NHS.
  • Experience of undertaking and organising clinical research and ability to appraise the scientific literature critically.
  • Presentations at national research meetings.
  • Knowledge of research and ethics.
  • Previous experience in leading Undergraduate or Postgraduate courses.

  • Research relevant to Dental and Maxillofacial radiology.
