Job overview

BSMHFT is one of the largest mental health Foundation Trusts in the country, providing mental health services to a culturally and socially-diverse population.

We are seeking to recruit a full time, permanent, Specialty doctor to work within the National Deaf Mental Health Service based at the Barberry in Birmingham. It is one of only 3 such centres across the UK directly commissioned by NHS England with a catchment area stretching from the North Sea coast to South Wales. The service is recognised as a National Specialised Service and designed for profoundly Deaf adults who are sign language users with a wide range of mental health problems and complex physical health and social needs.

Main duties of the job

You would be based at our 12-bedded inpatient unit at the Barberry and work closely with an experienced and highly specialised multidisciplinary team.  There are a number of staff who are themselves deaf.

Responsibilities will include initial and ongoing assessment of patients admitted to the ward and management of inpatients in conjunction with the MDT. There will also be some outpatient work. There will be opportunities for training in British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness. Encouragement will be given to take part in CPD, audit and teaching where appropriate.

Working for our organisation

There is a monthly peer-group meeting of Specialty Doctors (which includes teaching sessions), which you will be encouraged to attend.  There is a Postgraduate Academic Programme and MRCPsych course for trainee doctors which you will also be welcome to join.

We have an established process to support Specialty Doctors who wish to explore career progression in terms of Acting Up opportunities and support of CESR applications.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is based at the Jasmine Suite (Inpatient ward) at The Barberry with some work in the community. The hours are 9am to 5pm. There is no on-call commitment with this post.

You will be responsible for the care and treatment of Deaf adults suffering from mental disorders. This will include taking part in initial assessments, reviews and work within the MDT.  You will liaise with GPs and other clinical teams within and outside the Trust to provide specialists assessments.

The multi-disciplinary team including nurses, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and British Sign Language interpreters.
