Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two Band 7 Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapists to work as part of our multidisciplinary team, each based at one of our two secure hospitals for men. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, you will work collaboratively alongside colleagues from Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Nursing and Medical services. Our hospitals provide assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for service users with mental health needs.

A wide range of training opportunities relevant to the role will be available ensuring the successful candidate has the relevant skills work to within a mental health setting. 

The post is fixed term for 12 months, Monday – Friday working, flexible working requests considered up to 37.5 hours. Secondment opportunities considered.

Our hospital locations are The Tamarind Centre (B9 5PU), Reaside clinic (B45 9BE) combined with Hillis Lodge (B31 5HE).

Working as part of a dedicated Speech and Language Therapy team, this post would suit an applicant who has a genuine interest in working with adult who present with complex mental health and communication needs and enjoys working in a dynamic environment. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessment, diagnosis and advice on intervention with adults accessing specialist forensic services within BSMHFT.

The successful candidate will initially enter a supportive probation period of six months. Flexible working options available.

The post holder must have a Speech and Language degree qualification and be registered with the HCPC. Membership to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist`s is desirable.

Essential criteria
  • A recognised professional degree qualification in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Demonstrates highly specialist skills and knowledge in the area of SLCN, complex communication needs and/or neurodevelopmental conditions etc relevant to the role
  • Relevant post registration experience working with clients who present with complex communication needs and/or mental health needs
  • Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Demonstrates experience of line management responsibilities
  • Demonstrates knowledge of legislation, national standards and frameworks applicable to working in a mental health trust
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate some developing knowledge of trauma and adverse childhood experiences in relation to communication needs.
  • Demonstrates some or developing knowledge of how psychiatric conditions and\or dual diagnosis’s impacts on the communication
  • Experience of working within mental health, CAMHS, secure care or a learning disability environment.
