Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Audiology team at Birmingham Children's Hospital.  You will be working alongside Audiology professionals with a wealth of experience and the role will be very varied.  The department boasts newly refurbished testing rooms and a friendly working environment with a team passionate about Paediatric Audiology and delivering a quality service for our families.

Main duties of the job

Perform Pure Tone Audiometry to BSA standards

Visual Reinforcement Audiometry / Performance Audiometry

Hearing aid assessments and reviews on children 0-16 years to include Bone Conduction, BAHA and BTE aids performing Real Ear Measurement or RECD as standard

Opportunities for further development to include HTS modules as required

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MSc in Audiological Science or equivalent qualification plus experience
  • CAC or BAAT part II (or equivalent)
  • Strong audiological and scientific background
  • HPCP or AHCS registration
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • BSc in Clinical Audiology or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • MSc in Clinical Audiology

Personal

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to include ability to communicate with the hearing impaired and carers in emotional states.
  • Ability to cope with occasional exposure to highly distressing and emotional circumstances within specialist area. For example, parents reacting badly to the news their child has a hearing impairment.
  • Ability to manage hostile / antagonistic patient and families with strongly opposing views and objectives
  • Excellent manual dexterity and co-ordination to accurately manipulate equipment and small devices to include hearing aids and accessories and insert probe tubes accurately into babies ear canals
  • Ability to cope and concentrate on work when the work pattern is unpredictable, such as dealing with interruptions for clinical advice or managerial / co-ordination problems
  • Frequent requirement of intense prolonged concentration in both clinical and managerial roles
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, prioritise workloads.
  • Ability to work calmly and methodically when under pressure from a busy and varied caseload
  • Excellent written communications skills
Desirable criteria
  • Good presentation skills
  • To demonstrate excellent negotiation skills across a wide range of issues and with a wide range of agencies, e.g. education, health, social sciences and the voluntary/user sector

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of auditory habilitation and its instrumentation including hearing aids, FM systems and other hearing aids such as Bone Anchored, Bone Conduction and Assisted Listening Devices
  • Successful experience of multidisciplinary and inter-agency working
  • Active role in research and audit projects
Desirable criteria
  • Significant post qualification experience paediatric clinical audiology
  • Experience of working with infants and children with highly complex needs and their families e.g. a combination of medical, sensory, cognitive, physical
  • Experience in supervising and training clinical professionals
  • Experience of teaching and giving presentations
