Job overview

The Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated team player to join the perfusion team. The perfusion department performs 300-400 paediatric bypass cases per year operating on a variety of congenital heart defects.

The post is to cover maternity leave within the team and would be an exciting opportunity for a qualified perfusionist to come to Birmingham for 1 year to learn about Paediatric Perfusion techniques and Paediatric ECMO.

A complex procedural program with complex Pulmonary Atresia patients providing a large variety of challenging procedures. The department also provides support for the hospital’s commissioned ECLS service. We are enthusiastic about personal development, career progression, research and teaching, so paediatric experience is desirable however training will be given. Dependent on your experience, skills and knowledge, this role is offered at a Band 8b.

This is an excellent opportunity to expand your skills by joining a team in an exciting and challenging surgical environment.

Main duties of the job

These applicants must be fully accredited and registered with the College of Clinical Perfusionists of GB and Ireland.

The working week is 37.5 hours over 4 days with an essential on-call commitment.

Personal Skills/Abilities and Attributes

  • Occupational health/enhanced DBS clearance required.

  • Effective information technology skills, including advanced keyboard skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and various hospital and perfusion databases and applications

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MSc in Perfusion, or equivalent
  • Professional clinical registration with the College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of GB and Ireland
  • Accredited by the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists of GB and Ireland
  • Evidence of continual professional development

Knowledge and Nature of Experience

Essential criteria
  • Postgraduate knowledge of routine and highly specialised techniques
  • Evidence of policy and/or protocol development and post incident reporting
  • Maintenance of skills through further training
  • Deliver specialist training and provide support, motivation and education for trainee and junior members of clinical perfusion to ensure learning outcomes are met.
  • Research experience and demonstrate an aptitude for presentation and publications
  • Lead in multi-disciplinary team presentations of perfusion department audit
Desirable criteria
  • Familiar with a wide range of paediatric routine and highly specialist clinical perfusion techniques
  • Completed an approved ECLS/ECMO training course

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • -Ability to work efficiently and effectively in stressful or emotive highly complex situations for prolonged periods maintaining intense levels of concentration.
  • -Ability to lead in planning and providing cardiopulmonary bypass or extracorporeal circulatory life support to a broad range of different specialties, such as hepatology, respiratory or renal. Ability to adapt plans in time critical life dependent situations.
  • -Accountability for professional actions
  • -Ability to work in a challenging and busy environment
  • -Attention to detail and accuracy

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Excellent and robust interpersonal and communication skills
  • Advanced communication skills- able to convey highly complex and detailed information effectively and clearly to colleagues in the multi-disciplinary team. This is essential during cardio-pulmonary life support in theatre and emergency extra-corporeal life support in theatre, catheter labs or PICU.
  • Take part in on-call rota to allow cover service 24/7
  • Accountability to prioritise own workload appropriately and meet deadlines under pressure
  • Ability and willingness to accept additional responsibilities
  • Ability to work as an independent autonomous practitioner as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Lead in the production of staff rotas
  • Ordering of high cost consumables utilising the electronic ordering database
  • Signing off high-cost consumables utilising the electronic ordering database and signing off petty cash.
  • Coordinating with external departments and agencies to provide specialist equipment, including hardware, disposables, grafts and valves.
  • Lead in the development of departmental policies and protocols specific to perfusion
  • Lead in the development of Extracorporeal Life Support policies and protocols
  • Compliance of core mandatory and essential training
  • Ability to train junior perfusion staff and teach other professionals highly complex procedures.
  • Supervising the development of trainee Perfusionist’s research for their MSc.
  • Maintenance of professional status
