Have you an interest in paediatric diabetes and looking for a new challenge? The Diabetes team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital seeks a dynamic Band 6 nurse to join one of the UK’s largest paediatric diabetes units, serving over 350 children. 

You should be able to work autonomously, be enthusiastic and self- motivated, with a demonstrated interest in diabetes care. You should have some teaching experience and feel comfortable in using these skills to meet the needs of children, young people, their families and other professionals. You will be expected to embrace change and be dedicated to advancing diabetes care through collaborative working with the multi-disciplinary team in diabetes, and throughout the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will support and be supported in the MDT in providing care to children, young people and their families affected by Type 1, Type 2 and Rare Diabetes.  

  • It is expected that the post holder will develop their knowledge and understanding of the complex nature and medical requirements in managing these conditions to facilitate the delivery of support within the nursing team who provide 24 hour a day contact for families and be part of the daily shift system incorporating the outpatient telephone on-call, and weekend rotas.    

  • The nurse will work as a fully integrated member of the multi-disciplinary diabetes team, caring for the child with diabetes needs. 

  • Provide specialist nursing skills, knowledge, expertise and support these children and their families. 

  • Act as a resource and support for primary healthcare teams, shared-care centres and multi-disciplinary teams at BCH. 

  • All children receiving any form of investigation or treatment regarding their diabetes will receive appropriate care of the highest standard both in hospital and community setting.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC registration – child  nursing RNC or RN8
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable criteria
  • 1st Level Degree MCDC (Management of Childhood Diabetes Course)
  • Recognised Teaching and assessing/mentoring qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate experience of working with children with diabetes
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of teaching in a variety of settings using a range of different education and learning strategies
  • Evidence of commitment to educational initiatives to ensure the delivery of evidence based clinical practice and high quality care
  • Working knowledge of diabetes technologies – insulin pumps, CGM
  • Working knowledge of diabetes download software

Analyticsl and judgement skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work flexibly in the clinical environmen
  • Ability to organise self and others to work flexibly to deliver clinical skills that meet service need
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to plan, deliver and review programmes clinical training
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
