Job overview
A qualified CCAB accountant, the post holder must have good interpersonal skills and be able to liaise effectively with staff at all levels within the organisation as well as staff in other NHS and non-NHS organisations. This role involves a significant amount of autonomous working and initiative and the Post Holder will be able to work to strict deadlines and be capable of working under pressure within defined standards and policies.
Main duties of the job
The Senior Deputy Commercial Finance Manager or SDCFM will provide highly developed specialist financial management services to the Medicine & Genetics Division.
Additionally, they will cover for the Commercial Financial Manager [Medicine] providing Financial Management support and advice to Clinical & Operational budget holders, Chief Officers and other relevant officers within the Trust.

Personal Skills/Abilities and Attributes
Essential criteria
- Proven ability to advise / constrain senior budget holders to a certain course of action
- Demonstrable ability to assimilate and successfully communicate highly complex, sensitive and or conflicting information to often senior non-finance managers and other cohorts of staff.
- Proven ability to give complex financial presentations to large groups of senior non-finance managers conveying financial concepts clearly and persuasively.
Other Requirements
Essential criteria
- Comprehensive knowledge of MS Office and expertise in advanced financial modeling using spreadsheets and databases.
- Proven ability to concentrate frequently with an unpredictable work pattern with the ability to switch tasks at short notice.
- Able to concentrate for long periods when analysing complex data, statistics and preparing financial returns
- Ability to work flexibly in a complex financial environment independently and constructively as part of a wider team.
- Punctual and flexible across hours of work when required.
Knowledge & Nature of Experience
Essential criteria
- Highly developed and specialist knowledge of financial and accounting procedures, financial and other aspects of legislation and NHS finance policies and procedures, including current IFRS and Tax Legislation and its application within the NHS
- Significant experience and expertise in financial management with post-qualification experience in an acute NHS financial Management environment
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of financial reporting and control
Analytical and Judgement Skills

- Demonstrable ability to analyse highly complex problems relating to business case production and analysis
- Proven ability to make logical, considered judgments regarding the allocation of finances and financial risk where there is no precedent and where leading opinions may conflict.
- Experience of negotiating and influencing skills with a flexible and adaptable approach to problem-solving
Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience of being responsible for the day to day management of a finance team including the recruitment, development and appraisal
- Demonstrable ability to deal with staff performance and disciplinary issues effectively
- Develops and monitors budgets for external departments/services/programmes, providing comprehensive financial advice to them as required.
- Proven ability to both set and achieves realistic and measurable objectives within timescales
