Job overview
The Maternity Link Support Worker (MLSW) will focus on supporting the Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) to implement plans for improving better outcomes for pregnant women from ethnic minorities, by supporting delivery of clear communications in relation to the Maternity Care Bundle, Continuity of Carer, Saving Babies Lives and developments of Personalised Care Support Plans. The post holder will work closely with the Community Midwifery Teams, Continuity of Carer teams and local third sector organisations to build wraparound care and well-being service provision based in a community setting to improve outcomes for women from ethnic minorities throughout their pregnancy.
The MLSW will work within community maternity services to provide individualised support to women and will specifically deliver support to women and their families in a flexible and innovative way. Beyond this, the MLSW will also engage with the wellbeing of the women they interact with, promoting healthy lifestyles and signposting to other relevant services.
Main duties of the job
- You will have responsibility for managing a caseload, dealing with referrals, signposting, or referring people to specialist services, connecting people with community services to sustain seamless maternity care, providing continuity for their maternity health care and wellbeing needs.
- Your role involves working with people who might be experiencing issues with access to services connected to complex issues, so you will need good listening and communication skills and be able to build effective partnerships with a wide range of organisations and community groups.
- Being proactive forming a network with other maternity co-Link Workers and primary care network Link Workers to navigate the woman to the right help/ service.
- The MLSW will be required to manage their time effectively to meet the needs of the women and their families in addition to service needs as required across the LMNS.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NVQ Level 3 in Health care or equivalent
- Key Skills – literacy/numeracy
Desirable criteria
- GCSE pass in English Language or equivalent
- Trained in Making Every Contact Count and Motivational Interviewing
- Level 3 Award in British Sign Language or equivalent
- Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Able to demonstrate an understanding of health outcomes for ethnic minority women during pregnancy
- Healthy lifestyle/behavioural change experience
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable criteria
- Experience of providing support to women with ethnic minority backgrounds aligned to their social needs
- Experience working with pregnant women
- Previous experience in healthcare in the NHS
- Baby friendly standards training certificate
- Audit skills
- Evidence of working with vulnerable patients requiring specialist support
Professional/ Managerial/ Specialist Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Excellent and accurate data entry skills
Desirable criteria
- Experience of BadgerNet or patient records management system
- European Computer Driving License certification, or equivalent
