Main duties of the job

This is a full time post is to commence September 2026 for a period of 12 months. 50% of time will be dedicated to simulation teaching, development of courses and enhancing education and patient care within the neonatal unit and deanery utilising the new high-tech fully immersive simulation lab. There is an opportunity to complete a PGCert in Multi-Disciplinary Healthcare Simulation at the University of Birmingham, which will be fully funded.

The remaining 50% will be clinical work on the neonatal unit, participating on the tier 2 on call rota. There is a possibility that there will be opportunity to undertake simulation at the Birmingham Children’s site, and if so the time spent on simulation and the clinical rota with adjust accordingly.

Parkview Clinic is a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service Mental Health (CAMHS) facility in Moseley, for young people aged 11-18 years who require admission due to significant psychiatric difficulties.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post aims to give a tier 2 paediatric doctor (ST4 and above) who is interested in pursuing a career in neonatal medicine or paediatrics an opportunity to undertake an educational role with protected time and training (50% WTE). The role involves multi-disciplinary neonatal simulation. The post also includes regular responsibility within the clinical neonatal rota (50% WTE) at middle grade level at Birmingham Women’s Hospital 

The post is for 1 year (commencing September 2026).  

The Health Education West Midlands is supportive of trainees taking time out for opportunities such as this as long as it leads to a significant development, including peer-reviewed publication or higher degree. Prospective approval for appointment to these posts will need to be obtained. 

This post would involve some or all of the following areas: 

Simulation teaching :

Birmingham Women’s Hospital has just opened a dedicated Women’s and Neonatal Health Simulation Suite with a state of the art fully immersive simulation room utilising the latest simulated projector technology. 

This will involve working with the medical & nursing leads in the preparation, planning and delivery of neonatal multidisciplinary simulation training at BWH (50% WTE role). Assessment of the impact of simulation training on patient outcome, staff confidence & competence and develop the programme accordingly. Work with the education lead in delivering regional simulation teaching within the deanery education programme (including the ST1 skills day), as well the SHINE (Simulation Helping In Neonatal Emergencies) and Advanced SHINE neonatal simulation study day, Neo-CCCom-S (communication simulation day) and a Palliative Care simulation dayWe aim to become leaders in simulation training and this fellow role will be integral to this. There will be the opportunity to lead simulation based projects, the experience of which we aim to present and publish, thereby allowing the fellow to further develop their skills.  

 

NLS/ARNI:

BWH host several NLS courses each year and the education fellow will become part of our NLS faculty if qualified NLS instructor.  

 

Education qualification:

There will be an opportunity and funding to gain formal simulation instructor training, and potentially study towards a postgraduate medical education qualification, depending on individual motivation.  
 
This post provides a truly valuable opportunity for an enthusiastic, organised and ambitious trainee to receive clinical and educational training with continuity of ownership of many aspects of our neonatal education in a large perinatal centre.
