Neuro-Oncology Cancer Nurse Specialist

Job overview

The Neuro-oncology team support children, young people and their families with both high grade and low grade/benign tumours in the head and spine.

This role will assess, plan and facilitate holistic and seamless specialist cancer care. The post holder will advocate for and empower our patients, supporting them throughout all stages of their neuro-oncology 
care, treatment and palliative care planning.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in the hospital setting providing clinical leadership, promoting excellence in nursing 
practice and be able to work across organisational boundaries.

The post holder will develop and coordinate the care of all Neuro-Oncology patients working, advising and guiding across community and hospital settings.

The post holder will participate in the formal and informal education of students and of staff involved in the care of all patients.

The post holder will provide advice and expertise on the management of children and young people who are newly diagnosed or who have on-going health needs as a result of their treatment and rehabilitation.

The post holder will support patients and families from the time of diagnosis, throughout their treatment and beyond, consistently providing a high level of support, advice and assistance with the coordination of 
patient care.

The post holder will facilitate the transition of adolescents from paediatric to the adult health care setting working closely with the wider multi professional teams including late effects and endocrinology. The post holder will also work in parallel with the palliative care team, supporting and coordinating care for those patients on a palliative pathway.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree level qualification in Nursing or equivalent with active pin
  • Current registration with the NMC Registered Children’s Nurse
  • Completion of cancer training modules / relevant course / post graduate qualification or equivalent
  • Evidence of Child protection skills and training level 3 or willingness to undertake
  • Willingness to undertake Advanced Communications Skills training
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised mentoring qualification or equivalent

Knowledge & Nature of Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration nursing experience
  • Experience working with oncology / cancer patients and completion of cancer training course / modules
  • Ability to support and mentor students, along with newly qualified nurses in the department
  • Experience of leading practice and coordinating care within a clinical environment
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Educating ward staff, patients and their families using clinical expertise and knowledge
  • Ability to manage and prioritise workload
  • xperience of working collaboratively within a multiprofessional team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in paediatric neuro-oncology
  • Experience of training and supervising staff
  • Experience of service development and improvement

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent understanding of local and national service delivery for children
  • Evidence of commitment to educational initiatives to ensure the delivery of evidence based clinical practice and high-quality care
  • Able to make complex clinical decisions, analysing and interpreting complex information and comparing a range of options
  • Ability to assess and manage risk
  • Ability to act as an educational lead for other staff

Professional/Managerial/Specialist Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Proficiency in use of IT systems and clinical systems
  • IT skills including use of Microsoft Office packages
  • Up to date knowledge of oncology within paediatrics and NHS England Cancer Care Standards
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills at all levels with ability to adopt a collaborative working approach
  • Confidently provide expertise and specialist information within a multidisciplinary team setting
Desirable criteria
  • Commitment to involvement within wider Trust issues Experience of developing service improvement projects and policy changes that impact beyond own area

  • Excellent communication skills when working with our children, families and other staff members
  • Highly developed physical skills to deliver clinical care, e.g. intravenous injections, syringe pumps and infusion
