Consultant in Paediatric Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Flexible working arrangements may be considered and discussions with the recruiting manager regarding this are encouraged.

Job overview

Applications are invited for a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon to join the team in Department of Paediatric Surgery and Urology at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.  This is a substantive post.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital is part of Birmingham Women & Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.  The hospital covers a population of over 5 million and provides secondary, tertiary and quaternary services.  It is a designated Paediatric Major Trauma centre.

Paediatric Surgical service covers neonatal and general paediatric surgery, as well as gastroenterology, oncology, colorectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, major trauma and non-cardiac thoracic surgery.

Main duties of the job

This is a substantive post in paediatric surgery.  The successful applicant will be expected to have a subspeciality interest in Oncology & Thoracic Surgery and support in the provision of both of these areas of practice – including ovarian and testicular cryopreservation and vascular access.

This is a 10 PA job, including both elective and on-call commitments.  This post does not include the provision of any Specialist Paediatric Urology.

This post will include providing elective and on-call commitments in Paediatric Surgery over a 7-week cycle.  This is split into 5 weeks of purely “elective” commitments and a 2-week period of “emergency/on-call” provision.  During the second of these two “on-call” weeks the post-holder will also provide a neonatal surgery outreach service at Birmingham Women’s Hospital.  This neonatal surgical outreach service is supported by specialist neonatal surgery outreach nurses and is a patient review service, with no surgery taking place at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital.  These commitments match the current working pattern of the substantive consultants in the department.

The job plan will also include 1.5 SPAs and an allocation for administration and ward rounds.  Within these sessions the Post Holder will be expected to attend the departmental Grand Round on a Friday morning.  Non clinically, the successful applicant will be expected to support the education and research programs within the department.
