Consultant Geriatrician - Surgical Liaison

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

At Russell’s Hall Hospital, our Elderly Care Department provides compassionate, expert care tailored to the unique needs of older adults. With a team of highly skilled doctors, nurses, and specialists, we offer comprehensive assessment and treatment plans designed to enhance quality of life, promote independence, and support families every step of the way.

We are entering an exciting phase of growth and innovation in Elderly Care and Frailty services across Dudley, and we are looking for motivated consultants to be part of this transformation. These newly established roles offer a unique opportunity to work across both the surgical wards—supporting perioperative patients—and a dedicated 12-bed Elderly Care ward. You will play a pivotal role in shaping and expanding our surgical liaison services, with the scope to drive real change in how care is delivered.

The postholder will be actively involved in training and supervising resident doctors, contributing to audits, engaging in clinical governance, and helping to drive forward the development of both our Elderly Care and Surgical Liaison pathways.

If you're passionate about delivering high-quality care for older adults, thrive in a multidisciplinary setting, and are keen to lead service development, research, or education, this is an outstanding opportunity to take your career to the next level—and make a meaningful difference to patients across Dudley.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will work a 10 PA timetable, you will lead daily ward rounds supported by a skilled team including specialist nurses and junior doctors, ensuring continuity and excellence in patient management. You’ll also contribute to the perioperative care of surgical patients two afternoons a week and participate in the Care of the Elderly weekend ward round, alongside inclusion in the General Internal Medicine (GIM) weekend rota (1:22).

Ample time is built into the job plan for administrative responsibilities, and you’ll be encouraged to take an active role in clinical governance, audit, research, and quality improvement initiatives. As part of our commitment to education, the successful candidate will also support training and supervision of resident doctors, acting as both a clinical and educational supervisor.

The post holder will be expected to manage the flow of patients through the department and achieve the standards of 12-hour waits for specialist beds and help in achieving the ED 98% target by creating the capacity to move patients from the ED.  Support will be available from all other specialties in the Trust to achieve these targets.
