Job overview
A varied and rewarding role within a supportive team. The role is to provide a high-quality dietetic service to patients by managing a caseload of designated wards, clinics and to provide nutritional education to support patients, carers and other Health Care Professionals.
To be an active team member taking an role in department responsibilities and activities including projects, audits, student training and covering for colleagues
Main duties of the job
- Manage a caseload of medical and surgical wards
- To seek support for complex cases
- Manage own outpatient clinic seeing patient groups such as weight management, IBS, Coeliac disease, Diabetes and nutrition support
- To give nutrition education group talks on coeliac disease and MUST care plans
- Team work-to help and support colleagues
- Participate in clinical supervision
- Complete BDA B5 competencies to facilitate professional progress to Band 6

To communicate dietary information to a wide variety of individuals of differing backgrounds and age including those with communication difficulties and special needs, in a variety of settings including hospital wards and clinics. This will involve exposure to these settings.

To assess nutritional requirements, status and factors affecting nutritional intake as well as patients circumstances and ability to change, negotiating dietary targets with patients with a wide range of medical conditions. Using motivational interviewing skills to help them to make changes to their diets and lifestyles so that they can improve their health and well-being.

To calculate and monitor artificial enteral feeding regimens.

To prescribe supplements and enteral feeds for patients.

To manage own designated caseload under the supervision of a senior dietitian, deciding on own work area priorities and work schedules.

To manage out-patient clinics ensuring that patients are seen within a designated time frame, accurate notes are kept, referring agents are informed of treatment plans and progress and those patients receive appropriate follow up. These clinics may include children and will be in the acute and community setting.

To arrange continuing care as necessary in an appropriate setting or by telephone, in order to facilitate understanding and dietary compliance. Monitoring nutritional parameters and making changes as indicated. This includes adding to the electronic prescription and requesting the prescription of oral nutritional supplements when required.

To use a food first approach to nutritional care.

Work with nursing staff to ensure that patients being discharged on tube feeds have all the training, information feed and equipment they require.

To register the above patients with the appropriate home feed provider, contact their GP to request feed prescriptions and refer them to the appropriate community dietetic team for ongoing care.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
