We have an exciting opportunity available to join our Paediatric Emergency Department team at Russells Hall Hospital as Senior Clinical Sister/Charge Nurse.

The post holder will have responsibility for delivering high quality patient care within the designated area of the Paediatric Emergency Department and will provide effective clinical leadership including the organisation of the department and prioritisation of clinically unstable children.  He/she will be expected to embrace new operational challenges and proactively encourage the workforce to respond positively. 

The post holder will work with the clinical band 7 in the main Emergency Department to ensure safe effective clinical care of children ensuring capacity and flow is maintained within the area. 

The postholder will be instrumental in the transition phase of the newly built resuscitation area ensuring staff are developed and supported to work within this area.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the Matron, Lead Nurse, Medical Service Lead and Directorate Manager to embrace changes and new ways of working, to develop and monitor services and performance to enhance and improve the quality and standard of care delivered to patients within the Paediatric Emergency Department. 

Main duties of the job

To be an expert clinical practitioner providing effective leadership within the designated area of the Paediatric Emergency Department. 

 To manage and monitor daily staffing levels and skill mix to comply with agreed staffing levels and resources to ensure that appropriate 24hr nursing care is provided. 

 To participate in the off-duty rota, ensuring a Senior Clinical Nurse manages the shift at all times. 

 To be responsible for patient’s progress along the agreed care pathways within specified timeframes, which are supported by the implementation of evidence based practice. 

To act as a clinical expert to others providing clinical information and advice to junior staff, multidisciplinary team members, patients and relatives. 

To assist the Matron, Lead Nurse, Medical Service Lead and Clinical Director in the continuous improvement of the quality of patient care through the implementation of clinical governance activities.

To help manage a team of staff effectively to include individual staff performance, appraisal, personal development plans, sickness and absence and disciplinary processes, keeping Matron and Lead Nurse up to date with identified staff management issues.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Paediatric Nurse
  • Evidence of undertaking post-graduate study/CPD relevant to clinical specialty
  • Evidence of professional development and regular study since qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of undertaking a recognised course of study in teaching and assessing
  • Educated to 1st degree level or evidence of study at degree level

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Leadership and change management experience
  • Current children’s nurse experience
  • Evidence of professional development and regular study since qualification.
  • Experience of close liaison with members of multidisciplinary team.

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates effective skills in leadership, communication, negotiating and influencing others with safe systems of work to ensure health & safety
  • Good analytical and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Able to cope with unpredictable work patterns, changing circumstances and cope with distressing or emotional circumstances

Knowledge & Training

Essential criteria
  • Paediatric Advanced life support (EPALS) trained or a willing to work towards it.
  • Proven acute nursing experience in an acute paediatric setting
  • Evidence of employing extended high-level clinical skills
  • Knowledge of effective people management practice
  • Computer literate
  • Skilled practitioner who acts as a role model
  • Commitment to maintain own fitness for practice through maintaining a personal profile of competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of undertaking a Band 7 Development Course
  • Knowledge of clinical audit and effectiveness systems
