Job overview

The department offers a high-quality orthodontic service for local general dental practitioners, community dentists, general medical practitioners and other consultant colleagues. The Trust currently employs one locum Orthodontic Consultant, one part-time consultant, 2 part-time Orthodontic specialists, one Oral Consultant and two Maxillofacial Consultants. Oral and Maxillofacial services is a joint unit with New Cross Hospital Wolverhampton.

Main duties of the job

The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust is an acute care Foundation Teaching Trust catering

for a population of over 400,000 with a 782 bedded fully equipped modernised hospital, with two satellite units (equipped for outpatient and day case procedures).

The Trust has a clinically led structure. The Specialist Surgery Directorate forms part of the

Surgical Division, which is under the leadership of Mr Babar Elahi (Chief of Surgery), Mrs Kelly

Pettifer (Interim Director of Operations), and Ms Sara Davis (Divisional Chief Nurse).

The Specialist Surgery Directorate itself is under the Clinical Directorship of Mr Sohail Qureshi.

The Orthodontics Service is grouped with Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, ENT and Audiology and isled by Mr Mudit Jindal as Clinical Service Lead.

Excellent support is available from our onsite Maxillofacial laboratory that provides assistance with study models, PAR scoring and a full range of Orthodontic appliances including a 3D printer recently installed.

The service also provides joint clinics with Oral and Maxillofacial Consultants for complex cases.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Dental Degree: Primary dental qualification (BDS or equivalent) registered with the General Dental Council (GDC).
  • Specialist Qualification: Recognised postgraduate qualification in orthodontics (MOrth or equivalent).
  • CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) or equivalent for Orthodontics.
  • Current GDC Registration: Full and unrestricted registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) as a specialist in orthodontics.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional Qualifications: Additional qualifications or training in a subspecialty of orthodontics, such as craniofacial orthodontics, lingual orthodontics, or accelerated orthodontics.
  • Consultant Experience: Previous experience working as a consultant orthodontist or in a senior role within an orthodontic department.

Knowledge and Training

Essential criteria
  • Orthodontic Expertise: In-depth knowledge of orthodontic principles, procedures, and modern treatment techniques, including digital orthodontics.
  • Multidisciplinary Working: Experience in working within a multidisciplinary team, including collaboration with other medical professionals such as oral surgeons, periodontists, and paediatric dentists.
  • Clinical Governance: Understanding of clinical governance, risk management, and quality assurance processes.
  • Patient-Centred Care: Strong focus on providing high-quality, patient-centred care with an empathetic approach.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex treatment options clearly to patients and their families.
  • Research and Development: Experience in clinical research or audit and the ability to apply evidence-based practice to patient care

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience in orthodontics, with a proven track record in providing comprehensive orthodontic care in a clinical environment
  • Clinical Experience: Experience in a broad range of orthodontic cases, including complex cases and multidisciplinary care.
  • Leadership Experience: Experience in supervising and mentoring junior staff, dental trainees, and orthodontic therapists.

  • Leadership and Management: Experience in service development, audit, and leadership within a clinical setting. · Research: Active involvement in research or publications in the field of orthodontics.

  • Teaching and Training: Experience in teaching and training dental students, junior doctors, and orthodontic trainee
  • Innovation: Experience in implementing new technologies or innovative approaches to orthodontic care, including the use of artificial intelligence or digital scanning systems.
