Job overview

Mortuary Assistant will liaise with Trust colleagues, HM Majesty’s (HM) Coroner, Undertakers and other external agencies to provide a caring, compassionate mortuary service. Supporting the Mortuary Manager and their deputies with running the service with fellow APTs. The post holder will participate in the out of hours on call rota, once suitably trained and competency assessed.

Main duties of the job

To contribute to the conveyance of a mortuary service ensuring exceptional standards are achieved and sustained at all times.

The post holder will be trained to use all equipment and perform all duties in accordance with standard operating procedures under strict supervision with regular competency assessments.

 Ensure dignity and respect for the deceased is maintained at all times.

Contribute to the maintenance of quality management systems to maintain Human Tissue Authority (HTA) and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

 To assist during normal working hours with the receipt and proper storage of deceased patients, checking the correct identification at every stage and release of deceased patients to the duly authorised persons ensuring that they meet quality standards of identification and documentation as defined in Standard Operating Procedures.

 Daily preparing and measuring of deceased patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

On instruction, regular removing prostheses and complex pacemakers -implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD’s) before cremation.

· Assisting the Pathologists at Post-Mortem (PM) both digital and invasive,( including the preliminary dissection of deceased patients with strict supervision by a qualified Anatomical Pathology Technician (APT) for trainee APT) or mortuary assistants will follow supervised instruction for supporting duties in PM room, the correct labelling, weighing and treatment of specimens taken for laboratory examination.

· With support and supervision from qualified APT prepare/handle deceased patients from the community who may be decomposing or disfigured through Road Traffic Accident (RTA), other trauma or fire damage.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and Math’s, or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Level 2 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology/Any Relevant Human Anatomy Qualifications (e.g. Embalming).

Knowledge and Training

Essential criteria
  • Computer literate with accuracy in data input
Desirable criteria
  • A working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in dealing with highly stressful circumstances
Desirable criteria
  • Previous employment in a busy mortuary/funeral directors
