Job overview
The Consultant Neurologist will play a key role in delivering a General Neurology service. The post holder will provide outpatient consultation service and inpatient liaison neurology input shared with the other neurologists in the department. This involves review and management of acutely ill patients and the facility to access the full available services at the University Hospital Birmingham.
The appointee will be expected to participate in all departmental activities, including audit, teaching, sharing administrative responsibilities and contributing to the further development of the department are essential. The post holder will agree to work within the models of care agreed within the department.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will:
Provide direct input to patients, contribute to multidisciplinary teams and coordinate the care of patients within the Dudley Group of Hospitals.
Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional developments.
Develop close links with General Practitioners working in the geographical area and provide advice and guidance for General Practitioner.
Provide outpatient clinics for e-referrals from General Practitioners and other consultants and develop a local specialist service depending on their specialist interest.
Triage outpatient referrals to Neurology and provide advice and guidance to General Practitioners.
Undertake neurology ward consultations.
Perform duties in the occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the Clinical Directors.
There is no requirement to participate in an out of hours on call rota.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MRCP(UK) or recognised equivalent qualification
- Relevant professional qualifications
- Degree from a recognised University
- An appropriate higher degree (eg an MD, PhD or equivalent).
Profesional Registration
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration with License to practice
Desirable criteria
- Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) • Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
Experiance
Essential criteria
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST/CST in Neurology
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients and offer expert clinical opinion in the specialty
- Ability to advise on the smooth running of specialist services
Desirable criteria
- Training/experience in Neurology
