Main duties of the job
To be the Principle Specialist Radiographer responsible responsible for the operational management of the MRI department, providing an effective and efficient service to the department users, within the allocated budget, ensuring that the services are patient focused, and meet both nationally and locally agreed standards and targets
To be a source of advanced, specialist theoretical and practical knowledge to provide expert diagnostic advice and information for patients and other staff, and to ensure a safe working environment for staff, patients and visitors in accordance with the appropriate legislation and regulations.
To provide leadership for the MRI team, encouraging high standards and quality of work.
To take the lead for Governance and Risk Management within the designated clinical area, assisting the Medical Service Head and Radiology Manager to ensure that patient safety is at the centre of the Radiology Department’s delivery of patient
services

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
General Management within defined clinical areas
o To develop and maintain effective service provision including regular review of demand, activity and capacity statistics.
o To ensure delivery of a clinically sound and effective service, developing and maintaining systems of monitoring standards and quality assurance
programmes.
o To develop and implement a robust risk management strategy within the
defined clinical areas
o To be responsible for developing technical specifications, clinical evaluation and purchase of relevant equipment
o To be responsible for the day to day operational management of the defined clinical areas, ensuring the efficient and effective use of all resources o Manage and respond to complaints. To be responsible for ensuring that investigation and action is taken where appropriate to minimise further risk of complain to Manage and investigate adverse incidents, acting as DATIX incident manager
oTo be responsible for developing documenting and implementing action plans where necessary
o To assist the Radiology Manager with the development, implementation and review of the annual Business Plan and capital replacement programme
Financial Management
o To be a budget manager responsible for monitoring and control of a
designated budget in the department
o To be responsible in collaboration with the Radiology Manager for budget
setting
o To be an authorised signatory.
o Identify and implement strategies for cost improvement
o Responsible for ensuring cost effective ordering of goods and services,
adhering at all times to the Standing Financial Instructions
o Responsible for the accurate recording and sign off of electronic payroll turn round documents and staff expenses claims.
Human Resources Management
o To recruit and select staff members when required, ensuring that all Trust
Policies are adhered to.
o To manage sickness absence within the defined clinical areas
o Ensure that all relevant staff receive an annual appraisal
o To manage poor performance and disciplinary issues as required.
o In collaboration with the Radiology Manager ensure that progressive HR
practices are developed and maintained for example flexible work options, and that training, education and continuous professional development are
promoted within the Department
o To be responsible for the authorisation of annual leave and for maintaining accurate records.
Governance and Risk
o To ensure delivery of the Trust governance agenda, including Risk
Management, Health and Safety and quality standards through the
development , implementation and review of governance systems to ensure a safe clinical and working environment.
o Develop a mechanism for regular progress reports identifying the
Departments achievements, changes and forward plans for governance and risk management.
o Ensure that services are delivered within established quality parameters and that there is a structure for clinical effectiveness which is communicated and understood by all staff within the department
o Ensure that complaints and adverse incidents are handled appropriately
within agreed timescales and that prompt /correct action is taken.
o Liaise with the Trust PFI partners and facilities managers to ensure adequate maintenance of environment and equipment within the Department.
o Ensure that the Departments risk register is up to date
o Ensure that systems are in place to monitor and record staff competencies to operate medical devices.
Supports the Radiology Manager in ensuring compliance with legislation
relating to ionising radiation safety and protection
o To act as the Radiation protection supervisor (RPS) for Nuclear medicine,
working with guidance from the RPAs to ensure staff work according to local rules To arrange and set agenda for the Radiation protection group meetings, and to represent the department during Government Agency inspections
o To produce and administer IR(ME)R (Ionising Radiation (medical exposures) Regulations 2017) documentation for the trust in conjunction with the Radiation Protection Advisor Imaging Manager and Director of Radiology
Professional/Clinical
o Provide professional leadership and expert advice as a Trust wide resource, implementing and leading service development in line with current best practice.
o Develop policies and protocols ensuring that the service provided is evidenced based.
o Responsible for ensuring that the clinical standards and competencies of staff are maintained.
o Lead research and audit within specialist area.
o Responsible for the training of radiographers in clinical specialist area, acting as mentor and clinical supervisor for staff undertaking specialist nuclear medicine post graduate training.
o To manage a clinical caseload, including leading cardiac stress lists, as
appropriate. Must be willing to undertake training for this if not already
experienced
o To provide specialist advice and care to patients and carers relating to the
administration of radioactive substances and subsequent radiation protection instructions to protect staff, relatives and the public.
o To communicate information regarding risks associated with these
examinations, ensuring that they understand and accept these prior to
performing the tests and to sensitively communicate clinical condition related information.
o To provide specialised expert advice to clinical staff of all grades and specialities on the diagnostic investigations and interpretation within the clinical speciality.
o To be the named person and signatory for on- site scientific support and
supervision of staff and facilities, signing for this on ARSAC applications and renewals, ensuring that all examinations carried by the department are
authorised on these certificates.
o To be the local system administrator for the dedicated Nuclear medicine software system performing general housekeeping of data and production and updating of local bespoke workflows.
o To perform daily computer analysis of image data using dedicated nuclear
medicine software producing processed data for diagnostic reporting.
o To manage the handling, storage and disposal of Radioactive sources and waste ensuring accurate records are kept and to control against the loss or leakage of these sources and contamination of staff and facilities, ensuring compliance with the Environment Agency permits issued to the site, and to be the named responsible person for these permits.
o To act as the authorised officer for the service agreement for the purchase of Radiopharmaceuticals for the Trust liaising with the regional Radiopharmacy in relation to the supply and delivery of these items, and to ensure that correct records are kept of all Radioisotopes entering the department.
o To participate daily in the clinical workload, administering radiopharmaceuticals
by IV cannulation, imaging and reviewing images making decisions and
authorising further imaging in the form of hybrid imaging (SPECT/CT) in
accordance with protocols developed with the ARSAC holder.
o Administration of drugs adjunct to the imaging procedure as per protocols agreed with the ARSAC holder.
There may also be a requirement to undertake other similar duties as part of this post in order to provide a quality service. These will be consistent with the level of responsibilities outlined above.
